For sale: 1973 Jeep Wagoneer western survivor. 95k original miles, three older owners from 1973-2018, mostly inside stored. Purchased new by a 64 year old grandmother at Skyline Jeep in Polson, Montana. The Wagoneer was the vehicle of choice for affluent folks of that era who needed a stylish wagon with 4wd. They were well-built and expensive. This Jeep is loaded, all options including PS, PB, Quadra-Trac and factory A/C. The original owners pampered and kept it until 1989, when it was sold to a ranching couple in Rudyard, who used it as a “Sunday” rig for trips to town and for family vacations. The second owners sold in 2008 to another Hi-line couple who were absentee ranchers, they left the Jeep in a machine shed for use during visits to the ranch and during harvest. It’s been well maintained and driven regularly, not sitting fallow. It was properly stored, no rodent or moisture damage. Recent work in the last 2 years includes new water pump, belts and hoses, new master cylinder, complete service and fluid changes, and new tires. Here in the arid west the roads aren’t salted, but we do see rust where dirt/mud accumulates and holds moisture, so this truck has the usual rust around the rear wheels. Underside looks good, and of course we don’t see frame rot here. It’s a solid rig that could be used as is or a good candidate for restoration. Original and correct right down to the spare tire carrier and jack, documentation includes the original warranty papers. I’ll do my best to describe this Jeep below, PLEASE see the Photobucket album link with 70 pics including the underside in the description.
Exterior: Mostly original paint with a few touch ups, still shines and looks good from 20 feet. If you want a show truck, it WILL need paint. Fine as is for a driver. Straight truck with a few dings, one at top of driver door edge. Rust is cosmetic, not structural, limited to the typical rear wheel areas(a previous attempt at repair has been made there)and a few small blisters behind driver front wheel and on front valance. Underside looks good with only minor surface rust - floors, rockers, body mounts in good condition. Stainless and chrome moldings in good condition with no major pitting. Bumpers do need rechromed, chrome peeled in spots. Glass is good save for windshield which is cracked. Just an honest old truck that will draw a crowd at the gas station. PLEASE see linked Photobucket album for pics including underside.
Interior: All original in decent driver condition. Front seats have some tears, will need to be redone if you want it looking really sharp. Original dash, door panels, headliner all in good condition. Original carpet is intact but worn in a few spots. I think everything works - lights, gauges, wipers, heater, radio, etc. A/C is complete and blows cold, but its 20 degrees here, so hard to ascertain if fully functional. Rear window works per previous owner, but sometimes needs help going back up. I haven’t tried it for fear of it being stuck down during winter outside. Round clear plastic gauge lens on left side of dash came unglued as is typical of this era Wagoneer, it was re-glued once, but came loose again. Aftermarket oil and amp gauges added for increased accuracy. Overall nice enough that even the wife won't mind driving it.
Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives out well. Original 360 4 barrel and Turbo 400, no smoke, noise, or major leaks. 4wd works including low range and Quadra-Trac, dash light even comes on. I’ve only driven it around town, no major road trips, but it feels tight and nice. Doesn’t overheat. OEM recalcitrant Motorcrap carburetor was upgraded to Carter/Edelbrock. Runs smooth and fast idle works. Truck was always maintained, and I have receipts for over $1000 in recent work including complete service, new water pump and belts and hoses, and new master cylinder. Tires are new with perhaps 200 miles and are dated 2016. Wheels currently on the rig are a generic steel aftermarket type, I don't have the Jeep originals. Could source a set here locally if it's really important to you. Keep in mind that it is an old an truck, and old trucks are not perfect and need work, so if you haven’t messed around with vintage trucks, adjust your expectations accordingly.
Pricing/Misc: If you've been looking for a Wagoneer, you already know prices have gotten nutty. A decent survivor just sold for $24,500 here https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1977-jeep-wagoneer-2/ This truck is NO RESERVE and will sell. It runs and drives, but flying in and driving it home probably isn’t advisable, as Montana is a huge state with many remote areas with no cell service or roadside assistance. Reasonable transport is available, I will drive truck to meet your transporter and help load it. Title is clear and in my name, buyer will need to get insurance upon purchase as I will cancel mine. Truck can stay here for 30 days, after that $100/month storage will be due.
