I am a Jeep enthusiast and owned Jeeps for over 40 years. A friend from work that knows I have a passion for them connected me with an opportunity to purchase this Scrambler from an Estate over a year ago. When I spoke to family members, they could help very little with the history of the Jeep. I was told the owner was single and for many years this was his Special Toy he kept in his garage. I believe the previous owner to him “chromed out” the Jeep inside and out with almost every bolt on accessory like they did in the 80’s. He even went so far as to replace the rear end to narrow track to accommodate the wide chrome wheels and tires. Only clue I have from this previous owner is the F.O.P. window decal for 1984.
The good news is that when the most recent owner purchased the Jeep in 1990 (with only 43,000 miles), the rear end and axels (along with other misc. parts) was included in the sale (and will be included in this sale as well). What is amazing is that this owner had the Jeep in his garage for 27 years and drove it just over 3,000 miles! The Jeep was last plated in 2009. I have most all of the receipts which he kept in the glove box which shows that he bought new standard size aftermarket chrome wheels and Uniroyal Laredo tires within a few months of purchase. From that point, it appears he would let the vehicle sit too long as it has several Sears Diehard Battery receipts.
The Jeep’ six cylinder engine runs and idles very smooth and is mostly untouched and stock in the engine compartment. Most of the hoses and even ignition wires are still original! I changed the oil, cleaned the carb and installed new filters. It even still has the air pump for emissions but belt is removed and air injection tubes are rusted. I’ve not noticed any leaks on the floor but it does have an exhaust leak at the manifold to exhaust pipe junction that needs fixed. It also has manual choke which I would remove and connect back to automatic.
Four Speed Manual Transmission shifts like a very low mileage vehicle… no slop, tight and smooth.
Interior has several chrome aftermarket add ones you can see in the photos as well as a really cool Hurst Shifter Boot. Stereo / Cassette works and sounds good and has rear box speakers behind the seats (on the floor). Passenger seat is real nice and driver’s side bottom cover has age cracking shown in a pic. Apparently it was not smoked in as it has no ash tray. Amazing that the factory clock and tach still works! AC compressor can turn on but I’m sure it has no Freon.
The body has some rust in a few areas you can see in the photos. There is one spot in the bed next to the penny that has rusted thru in the bed that I can’t explain when the rest of the bed is in such nice condition (can see it did not see much use). Pics show the worst rust by far which is about a 12 inch square on the flat bottom of both the floorboards (driver side is worst). This is a body shop easy fix and is not visible when repaired. Paint is not bad for a 35 year old vehicle but it hasn’t had much sun exposure in the garage.
The Frame is very nice and solid. I tried to take some pictures of the worst areas known for Scrambler. I had to replace the brake cylinder as it was leaking. It stops fine but I’m not sure the rear brakes are working right yet and the parking brake sticks when engaged. As old as the tires are, they still look like new, are soft and run smooth down the road. The chrome on the wheels is dull in most areas from neglect. The spare is an original Jeep steel wheel but flat.
The fuel sender was bad and when I dropped the tank to replace with new and could see inside, I decided to replace the gas tank and skid plate as well for future reliability.
I have the original owner’s manual & paperwork along with the original Jeep Sales brochure that will be included as well as all the receipts and owner registrations from the estate. Also included is the manual for the aftermarket cruise control which currently is not functional. Jeep has wheel locks and I have the keyed socket. I was given the original ignition key only and the door key was not found and will have to be keyed.
This Jeep has lots of potential whether the next owner decides to restore or continue to perfect for the Survivor route. Either way, it is a lot of help starting with a low mileage original mostly unmolested Jeep in this condition!
- In the last photo you will see a 1 piece hardtop which I purchased separately from the estate that IS NOT INCLUDED in this sale. I will offer it for purchase to the winning bidder 1st. This hardtop I believe is ACME Brand and is really nice. Latches inside still have bright plating, widows are very nice with smooth operation and the fiberglass is in great condition inside and out. I believe it has seen very little use. The vertical storage dolly will also be included which makes it very convenient to move and store.
I’ve done my best to describe the condition of the Scrambler and it would be best for the purchaser to see it for himself. I would be happy to answer any questions in writing or I can be reached in evenings at three 17, 576, forty-eight 12. Leave a message and I will get back to you. Any shipping arrangements and cost will be the full responsibility of the Buyer. I can hold the vehicle for a reasonable period of time after payment. I have clear title in my name.
