Are you a Jeep fan who misses the very capable Comanche pickups that were built for 7 short years? Or maybe you had one, and would like to find another, but with the rare Laredo package that included the best of everything? Or maybe, you are waiting to be introduced to this truck for the first time. For any and all of those reasons, you should check out this very low mileage example that looks as good as it did sitting on the showroom floor 30 years ago.
This truck has obviously lead a pampered life. It has been well maintained and driven gently. Due to some very common clear coat peeling that was occurring, the owner was prompted to wait in line for several years in order to have a well-respected body shop restore the Grenadine Metallic basecoat/clearcoat paint to its original factory luster. They even took the extra measure of respraying the gray on the wheels, so that they matched the fender flares perfectly. The grill and brightwork around the marker lights, windshield, and door handles is in great shape and shines like new. A chrome, diamond plate rear bumper dresses up the back of the truck and a Duraliner bed liner is in place so you don't have to feel bad about actually throwing cargo in there to use it like a truck. Comanche and Laredo script are on the front fenders and Jeep appears on the tailgate.
As showroom sweet as the outside of this Comanche is, the inside is arguably the most impressive part of this Jeep. It is all stock, unchanged, and in immaculate condition. Open the doors and you immediately see that the tops of the deep red door panels, as well as the top of the dash, show no evidence of having been parked in the sun and left to cook. The matching carpeting is in great shape, as are the seats with their plaid inserts providing nice support and comfort. A 3 spoke steering wheel with Jeep horn button feels good in your hands, and the shifter for the 5-speed manual transmission falls easily to hand. The odometer in the dash panel proudly displays the very low, 45,441 actual miles this truck has traveled. The original radio is even still in place. Below it are the ventilation controls which include those for the A/C that blows nice and cold.
The engine compartment and drivetrain are all 100% stock, well maintained, and are in like new operating condition. It even still has all the correct factory stickers on the firewall and the radiator support. The 4.0L in-line 6 is well known to be a powerful engine and has proven its reliability through the years. What is less well known is that it has powered Comanches to speed records at Bonneville and IHRA records in the quarter mile. Not bad for an unassuming workhorse 6 cylinder engine. The frame on the Comanche is an interesting hybrid. It is a unibody in the front, for the cab, and a body on frame for the bed. That makes it a real truck, with a removable bed, and not a "coupe utility" like other pickups that are full unibody in construction. The truck rides on General Grabber 225/75R16 tires at all four corners for a nice ride and balanced handling.
Come on down and check out this all original, unmolested '88 Laredo. It may bring back memories, and could definitely create new ones for the next lucky owner.
