Here is a sharp 1990 Jeep Wrangler 5spd 4cyl with a frame that will need multiple repairs. I JUST bought this and the seller was a little less than transparent about the frame issues. After I drove it 400 miles home, I was surprised that my local shop said "no way" on an inspection sticker because of multiple areas of frame rot. So, if you are a MIG (or TIG) welder type, this might be a great deal for you. I'm loosing tons of money on this after taking a chance sight-unseen, and being duped by a seller who did not reveal the frame issues.
The Jeep has a clean New York State title.
The transmission shifts cleanly and the clutch responds very well. The Jeep just had front brake shoes put on it. The body (tub) is pretty solid with just a few spots of rust bubbling up under the paint job (as displayed in the photos). The interior is quite nice. It has a contemporary SONY stereo installed, that is wired to the stock (crummy) speakers. There's a good amount of tread life left on the big GoodYear 'Wrangler' tires. I was told the 4 wheel drive is in good working order by the seller, so I tested it: with fresh show on the street I pointed the Jeep up a hill and spun the rear tires in 2WD mode. I then pulled the 4WD shifter back and the Jeep pulled right out of the snow and up the hill. THEN 5 seconds later it made a big grinding sound like it had popped out of gear, and each subsequent time I came to a stop and put it in 4WD to drive away, it made that same sound. I suspect this is just a needed linkage adjustment, but I am not an expert on these systems. The fact is, for a short moment, the 4WD worked, and I know these Jeeps can be really finicky about staying in 4WD and a lot of guys have learned how to fix that, sometimes with little cable controller connections and what not. I'm not one of those guys! haha]*
The exhaust lead-pipe is dented and therefore somewhat constricted and should probably be replaced. That might breath a little power back into the classically under-powered 2.5 4cyl. On my way back from the garage I was getting some exhaust fume smell coming into the passenger compartment, so this could use some attention. Besides not liking steep inclines out on the highway, the engine starts right up and ran smoothly for my 400 mile 'test'. There is a brake fluid leak in the rear passenger-side wheel cylinder. Being a Jeep Wrangler, the door latches and locks are finicky and seem to work only at certain temperatures. If you know Jeeps, you already know about this! Oh, and in my one drive in this Jeep, one or two gauges in the dashboard seemed to be a little possessed.
I had the Jeep over at a frame/welding shop and was going to have it repaired. But then they discovered another 'soft' area under the steering box, and the estimate jumped up to 1,500 bucks, and I bailed. That spot was in addition to both rear shock mounts being broken, and a few areas that the garage mechanic could poke his fingers right into that of course are supposed to be solid frame rails. That and there's some kind of bolted on shackle on the rear axle to hold something together that rusted. Sorry I can't explain that better! It was a lot to take in when I was being told what was wrong with this sweet looking Wrangler's frame!
3 very small changes from the pictures: 1) I touched up a bunch of small scratches so the Jeep actually looks just a little bit better now. 2) I pulled the window tint off of the drivers door window (only) because you could not see anything through it !!! 3) A small section (about 4") of yellow paint flaked off right in the middle of the hood.
Do please examine the pictures very closely. Yeah it's a sharp head-turning Jeep, but it is by no means a car-show paint job! If you are in the Western New York area and want to see the truck before bidding, that can be accommodated.
Plan on towing/trailering this vehicle! With a brake fluid leak and a rotted frame I can not recommend driving this vehicle to your destination! Plus the emergency brake pedal is not currently hooked-up.
