1969 Jaguar XKE XKE 4.2 Liter OTS (Open Two Seater) Comprehensive Frame-Up Restoration - Completed & Documented by British Restoration Specialists Numbers Matching Example Finished in Original Factory Signal Red with Biscuit Leather & Matching Canvas Boot…Simply Stunning! __________________________________________________ HISTORY - JAGUAR E-TYPE By the very early 1960 the Jaguar XK150s, though good cars, were no longer pacesetters and Jaguar needed to make a quantum leap forward to maintain sales and prestige. The E-Type, which was announced at Geneva in March 1961, was just that. Like the XK120 in 1948, it was an absolute sensation. The body styling was sensuous, beautiful, and the car set new standards in all areas. A brand new independent rear suspension was designed by Bob Knight. The car had the triple carburetor 3.8 litre XK engine first seen in the XK150 "S". Producing 265 bhp in a lighter aerodynamic body gave virtual 150 mph performance, with acceleration of 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds. The E-Type, or XK-E as it would be known in the States, seemed to have the best of all worlds. It was very fast, had vivid acceleration, great flexibility, unheard of comfort and refinement for such a car, and pure good looks. Even the launch was dramatic. Most testing had been carried out on a couple of open roadsters, but it was decided to produce a Fixed Head after a brilliant American sheet metal craftsman, Bob Blake, created a mock up for Lyons. The Fixed Head version was built and loaned to various motoring magazines and newspapers in early 1961. The car proved capable of the magic 150 mph, a relief to Jaguar who had already printed the brochures. This same car was presented to the press at Geneva. The press reaction was ecstatic, as was that of the public. Rarely, if ever, had a car been so lauded. The price added to the incredulity at £1,830 for the Roadster and £1,954 for the Fixed Head. Aston Martins were twice the price and Ferraris nearly three times. A few weeks later two Roadsters and two Fixed Heads were shown at the New York Motor Show. The reaction was equally extraordinary. As with the XK120, Jaguar's claims were tested on the race track. Two cars were entered in the 25 lap GT Trophy race on the twisting, undulating circuit at Oulton Park. They were entrusted to Graham Hill and Roy Salvadori, who were up against competition Ferrari's and Aston Martin's. The Series II XKE was introduced in 1968 and continued through 1971. Production was limited with an estimated 13,490 cars with only 8,628 representing the desirable roadster (convertible). Upgrades features included improved bumper protection and a larger front grill "mouth” that coupled with twin electric fans that resulted in improved cooling. Safety upgrades consisted of flat rocker switches, a combination steering lock and ignition key and the removal of a starter button. A new steering column with a collapsible section was added to reduce the possibility of injury in the event of an accident. While most Series II Jaguars were fitted with twin Stromberg smog / de-tuned carburetors that reduced horsepower by approximately 20hp, this car was retro-fitted with the desirable triple-carburetor set-up resulting in higher horsepower on this car. The engine is easily identified visually by the change from smooth polished cam covers to a "ribbed" appearance. New seats were fitted which allowed the fitment of head restraints, as required by U.S. law beginning in 1969. The interior and dashboard were also redesigned; rocker switches that met US health and safety regulations were substituted for toggle switches. The dashboard switches while similar to the earlier XKEs were safer and improved. Air conditioning was available as a factory option. Like I said, this is a stunning car. Mechanically the recent independent mechanical inspection revealed no mechanical issues. This matching numbers Jaguar has been well cared for, and it shows. The car runs as an E-Type should aided by the addition of the three SU carburetors and required manifold as found on the Series I Jaguar XKEs. This makes a significant difference in drivability / performance and increases the horsepower by 20+ hp. The undercarriage of the Jaguar has been restored and shows only light patina from minimal use. The engine compartment is very clean but not over-detailed. The frame rails are free from damage or scratches and were restored when the car was restored. The chassis members are not damage and show scratch free paint. The addition of the tri-carb SUs adds a nice appearance in addition to providing better drivability and performance. The engine and major drive-line components are clean as are suspension components and other undercarriage parts. The car's owner estimates that the car has traveled fewer than 5,000 miles are estimated to have been accumulated since the restoration. Mileage is reported as 29,844 although based on the age of the XKE we must report the mileage as TMU (Total Miles Unknown). The XKE starts immediately with the use of the choke (when cold) and warms quickly. The car is fitted with an upgraded electronic ignition system that is transparent, but makes the car increasingly reliable and trouble free. Oil pressure and other vital signs are excellent and all gauges and electrical systems are fully functional. You would be hard pressed to find a better running, smoother, and mechanically sound E-Type roadster anywhere in the country. The Jaguar does not leak significantly (of course, some "seeping” is a part of even the finest restored vintage British car) and does not smoke or have unusual noise from the engine or drive-line. The engine is very strong and pulls smoothly and briskly through all 4 gears. The syncromesh is excellent in 1-4th gears, the clutch engages properly and the 4-wheel disc brakes stop the car with ease. Garaged all its life, this car has not seen any inclement weather and the entire car (both topside and undercarriage show NO signs of rust or indication that the car had rust repair. This is a very special XKE that shows the meticulous care and passion of its owners. Whether you would like to parade this beautiful classic in the next Concourse d'Elegance, or simply enjoy it with the top down on a quiet Sunday afternoon, this XKE will not disappoint and is certain to turn heads as one of the most iconic British cars of all time.
