An instant icon from its launch at the March 1961 Geneva Salon, Jaguars sexy projectile-shaped E-Type, known as the XKE in America, remains a design benchmark with race-bred performance and continues to captivate sports-car enthusiasts everywhere. As the successor to the glorious C- and D-Type sports racers that propelled Jaguar to 5 Le Mans victories in the 1950s, the E-Type was essentially a racing car for the road, advertised by Jaguar as the first series-production sports car to break the 150-mph barrier. Steady development brought improved interior comfort and from 1964, a larger 4.2-liter engine and synchromesh gearbox. Its original projectile-like styling was left undisturbed and remains universally acclaimed today as a design benchmark, with an E-Type on permanent display at New Yorks Museum of Modern Art.
