As is stated above, this is a NO RESERVE auction for a 1993 Jaguar XJS Convertible. These are absolutely beautiful cars, wonderful to drive, and are future collector classics, especially the ones like this with the tough, reliable straight-6 engine. I was told that this car was originally owned by a doctor when I bought it nearly 2 years ago. I enjoyed it for the late summer / fall of 2014, then put it in dry storage in an insulated garage, where it stayed until last weekend. I had to jump the battery, but the engine fired right up and drove 20 miles home at 70mph on the highway, and then through stop and go traffic, without any trouble. I love these Jags, and they are getting hard to find. It pains me to sell this one, but it’s the age-old problem of too many projects and too little time and money. This car needs some work, but is an excellent base for someone to start with, and a great investment opportunity.
As is stated above, this XJS has the 4.0L Straight-6 cylinder. This engine has ample power, and easily rockets the car up to highway speeds. These engines are well known for being reliable, unlike the V12s which almost never run properly due to electrical faults. The V12 is impressive, but the straight 6 is the one to own if you want to drive and enjoy the car, rather than spend your time chasing down misfires, etc. This straight 6 runs great, and does not overheat or have blow-by. If the engine is cold, there is a small amount of oil smoke from the exhaust at start-up, but it clears after a minute or two. Oil pressure is good, even at idle, and there are no knocks or unusual noises. The automatic transmission is quiet and shifts through all of its gears normally. About a month before I put the car into storage I did an oil and filter change using Rotella 15W-40 oil. I also drained and re-filled the automatic transmission fluid with Pennzoil ATF. The brakes are strong. The suspension feels good, and the car glides beautifully over the road. However, the rear is too soft over bumps, so it would be worth replacing the rear shocks. I have 2 Bilstein HD rear shocks for this car that are new in the box, and would be willing to sell them separately to the winning bidder (you need two more to complete the rear set). This car does have a bad ground somewhere, and if left sitting for 3 or more days without starting it will drain the battery. The previous owner installed a knob on the negative terminal of the battery that allows you to easily disconnect it to stop the drain if it is going to sit unused for more than 3 days. There is a small exhaust leak from the front of the mid-pipe beneath the car. It actually sounds pretty good, but should be repaired. The check engine light is on, but the engine runs fine.
The exterior of this car is beautiful, and it turns heads everywhere it goes. I have not found any major rust or rust holes. The body and undercarriage appear solid. The paint is not perfect, but is probably better than average for one of these cars. The color is almost a “candy apple” red. It looks dark in the shade and at night, but it is a deep, brilliant red in the sunlight. The car has been re-sprayed in the past, and there is the odd imperfection – a few spots where the paint has flaked, a few small spots of surface rust, the odd small scratch or chip, a small crease on the hood that was painted over, some discoloration below the gas cap from spilled gas (this may buff out) – but it still looks good, even up close. The convertible top was replaced not long before I bought the car, and is in great shape with a glass rear window. This car has the best looking factory alloy wheels that were available for the XJS. The BFGoodrich tires have good tread, but also have weather cracks. The radio antenna is stuck in the up position, and the trunk latch is broken. The previous owner drilled a hole through the panel behind the license plate so that you can trip the latch with your finger to open the trunk. This car still has its spare and tool kit in the trunk, and comes with 2 sets of keys. The exterior lights all work except for the fog lamps.
The tan interior of this car looks good, but definitely has some wear and tear. I would say it is probably about average for one of these cars at this age. The leather seats are very comfortable and supportive, and the leather is still soft. There are creases in the leather. The dash and door panels are in decent shape, but the walnut accents have suffered. They are cracked in places and, at the front of each door the walnut has dried out and started to peel. The carpets have some wear and tear, but are still presentable. Most of the electrics work, which is quite impressive for an older British car! All of the gauges on the dash work, as well as the power top and power windows (there is a matching factory tonneau cover for the top when it is down). The wipers, lights, horn, turn signals, trip computer and power locks all work as well. The power seats and power mirrors are not working, I have not tested the cruise control, the radio turns on but flashes “code” – a Jaguar dealer may be able to look up this security code. The heater works well. The A/C feels cool to me, but I have not had a hot day to test it out, so I can’t guarantee that it works. As with most older convertibles, in hard rains or high-pressure car washes there is a trickle of water from the front corners of the top where it meets the windshield. This can probably be fixed by replacing the rubber seals there, otherwise the top has no leaks. I did find that in a high-pressure car wash, there is significant leakage coming from under the dash into the foot wells. I suspect that the drains in front of the windshield may need to be cleaned, or perhaps the excess water overwhelmed them, since this is not a problem in normal rainy weather.
This car is absolutely beautiful. It will make a great summer driver for someone. It is wonderful to drive, and is so much fun with the top down. It needs some work to make it right, but I would class it as a “drive and restore” car, and it is a good, unmolested base to start from - no botched 350 transplant history. This XJS has the right engine, it just needs someone with the time and expertise to care for it. I would say that this XJS is in better condition than most that I have seen, but it is not perfect or near perfect. It is not in showroom condition, it has some faults, but it is still a nice car. Please read the description thoroughly, examine all of the pictures and then come see / drive the car in person before you decide to bid. I welcome bidders to come check out this car, just please give me at least 24 hours notice that you want to come so that I can adjust my busy schedule. I am selling this car on behalf of my father because he does not use the internet. This car is owned by his small, used car dealership. I am open to offers made through ebay in accordance with ebay rules, and reserve the right to stop the auction if an offer is accepted, however, no offers made on the final day or after the auction has been won will be accepted.
