The Kougar arose in the mid-1970s when EnglishmanRick Stevens decided to build his own sports cararound the power train and chassis partstaken from his Jaguar S sedan.
Stevens created a tube frame chassis that would accommodated the uniqueindependent rear suspension withinboard disc brakesfrom his Jaguar SedanHe called the new car a Kougar,The design of the roadster body, it is said, was inspired by the 1950 Healey Silverstone andthe pre-war Frazer Nash TT Replica. There is also a strong resemblance to theJaguar-powered HWM racer of the mid-1950s.Stevens built an aluminum-bodied Kougar prototype in 1976 and then fabricated fiberglass molds to begin production.

There were more than enough old Jag sedans todonate their drive trains to the new Kougar roadsters. It is said that the company built, perhaps, 315 Kougars, mostly finished carsbutsome kits.
Ownership of the small manufacturingconcern has passed through several hands andis still in business in Rye, East Sussex, England.Spare parts are still available and an activeKougar Owners Club in England to support.According to the club's website,Mr. Stevens is still the president.
This car was built using a 1961 Jaguar sedan as a source for Drive train and other parts, and was thereforeregistered as a1961 Jaguar. The dual-carburetor six-cylinder Jaguar engine provided 220 hp in the Jaguar Mk II Sedan so it can yield very quick performance in the Kougar, which only weighs about 2,100 pounds.
