1985 Jaguar XJS Additional Info:
Up for auction is my 1985 Jaguar XJS V12. Looks great, uns smooth and strong. But...was changing coolant and found a small amount of oil in the expansion tank. Most likely culprit is a head gasket leak. Bummer. Car has never overheated, uns strong, mooth and cool. No water contamination in the oil, nd no signs of cylinder leakage. Driven regularly (now carefully) with no apparent further ill effects. But alas, t is now a project car. So, ere's the rest:
The Good:
-Straight, 9.9% rust free body(dime-sized blemish at quarter panel/rocker joint;couple surface bubbles in trunk drip rail) with beautiful pewter gray finish--no fading, o cracking--a few tiny chips and light scratches here and there (see photos)--but the overall effect is stunning.
-Chrome and rubber very good to excellent
-Engine fires at 1st bump--runs strong, mooth and cool. No smoke, o noises, ut...(see above)
-Transmission functions perfectly
-Suspension nice and tight
-New shocks all around
-New fuel pump and filter
-Yokahama tires (about 50% tread)
-Power windows/locks/interior lighting work properly
-All gauges work (voltmeter reads low---false reading--charging system fine)
-Carpeting and interior leather panels excellent
-Trunk nice and clean, ll carpeting excellent
-Extensive service records included
The Sketchy:
-Small amount of oil found in coolant expansion tank--probably head gasket leak
-Leaks a little oil (little drip on floor)--may be connected to above, r may just be "If your Jaguar's not leaking oil, t's probably out of oil"
-Wood shows usual crazing in veneer (see photos)
-Seams split in front seats (Leather still very good--needs to be resewn)
-floppy headliner (pinned up)
-Trip computer ist kaput
-AC/Heat works perfectly--When it works at all--which is completely random: sometimes it will crank right up, ometimes you turn on the switch and...bupkis. Sometimes it will magically come alive as you're driving down the road. I've tracked this to the fan/compressor control circuit (which was rewired by the PO)--Most likely culprit is the 'amplifier' which is really just a little relay pack--you can find 'em online for about a hundred bucks, nd replacement is a light afternoon project (it's behind the left console kick panel)
-Right radio channel out;
-Auxiliary cooling fan switch sticky (sometimes it comes on when you turn on the ignition)
So, n sum, hat we have here is a really nice hobby/project car that you can enjoy while you tinker. I'd drive it cross-country were it not for the likely head gasket issue. As such, strongly recommend having it shipped. Love the thing, ut just took on an old Alfa Spider, nd one project has to go.
