This wonderful old Mk II has spent its entire life with one family in La Jolla, California. It has obviously been cherished and cared for throughout 50 years of ownership, and has been driven only 50,642 miles from new. The car has been well serviced and maintained, including recent tires and a stainless steel exhaust. After half a century, it is now ready for its second owner!
I would have no hesitation driving this car on a journey of several hundred miles. She starts on the button every time, runs cool, and is an absolute joy to drive.
At some point in the distant past, presumably as a result of a lifetime in the baking Southern California sun, the Mk II was treated to a repaint. Although the paint is shiny and presents quite well, it is only of 'driver quality'. Furthermore, whoever painted the car did not quite recapture the original Opalescent Silver Blue hue, so the color is a little darker than it would have been when new. As is almost always the case, the paint looks better in the photographs than it does in person. Having said that, this is a no apologies car. It is not being presented as a show car, rather it is a wonderfully original car with lots of character and patina. The worst areas of the paint are some very minor surface bubbling on the rear edge of the driver's door and the lower right corner of the left hand rear door. I have included close-up photos of these areas below, both of which are almost certainly the product of inadequate preparation when the car was repainted many years ago.
It is difficult to imagine finding a more rust free Mk II that has not been subject to a total body restoration. The chrome is not perfect, although is for the most part shiny and very presentable, and could certainly be left as it is for many years to come. There is a complete and immaculate tool kit in the boot.
The completely original interior of the car is obviously showing its age, especially the front seats and front carpets. Personally, I think it would be a shame to re-trim the front seats, which are still comfortable and full of character. They do have a couple of areas where the hide is torn, although a skillful upholsterer could probably work wonders repairing and re-dying the leather. This would be a personal judgment call for the new owner to make - as I say, I would leave the seats if I was going to keep the car. The hide on the rear seat is in fantastic shape and can definitely be saved with some hide food and possibly a partial re-dye. The driver's footwell carpet should probably be replaced, although the front passenger and rear compartment carpets are in very presentable shape.
The walnut trim throughout the car is absolutely beautiful. The smell of the wood and leather in this car is just glorious.
Mk II Jaguars are undoubtedly sleepers in the current classic car market. When compared to some of their more expensive siblings, the Mk II offers sensational value, while still providing style, grace, elegance, comfort, and of course performance, in spades. Very few cars, at any price, can match the 'feel good' feeling of driving a beautifully preserved Jaguar Mk II.
This may be the very last one owner, rust free southern California Mk II Jaguar. There certainly can't be many left. Don't miss this opportunity to own a very special Jaguar at a very reasonable price point. The Mk II might just be the best long term investment in the classic Jaguar world.
