1980 International Harvester Scout Additional Info:
Fantastic all original condition. Rust Free came from Jackson Hole Wyoming high desert. ALL ORIGINAL 1980 Turbo Diesel with 49,353 original miles. The Holy Grail of Scouts.
I purchased this vehicle from the grandson of the original owner. It is not a trailer queen, but a real original survivor. It was his grandfather's fly fishing vehicle in his retirement work as a guide. The original condition was undeniable as was the low mileage.
When I received the scout I changed all of the fluids, tranny seals, glow plugs, new front and rear breaks. The vehilce ran great, but did the four wheel drive would not engage. I rebuilt the Dana 300 transfer case, so all is sorted out--$1400 from local respected performance shop.
The vehicle was rust free top and bottom. The only surface rust is where stone chips hit behind the wheels and where the paint was thin on two 2-3 inch spots on drivers side and on the hood where the buffer hit the crease line. See photos or I can send more photos. The tailgate, bottoms of doors, cowl, etc. are all solid as can be. The patina is perfect and I felt it would be a shame to alter any of it. They are only original once. The original stripe is crackled with authenticity. This one is fantastic. The only paint work was on the windshield surround. There was slight bubbling near the lower seal. I needed to replace a cracked windshield, so I had the surface bubbling repaired and painted before a correct windshield was replaced with all new correct gasket with the silver locking channel.
I put a softtopper convertible top on the vehicle I got the dark tint windows and have both the window piece and screen piece for the tailgate window. When I purchase the vehicle, the top had never been off. The hard top is in great shape. I only put it back on once so they could buff it with the rest of the vehicle when I had the windshield repaired since it's a summer vehicle for me. I did slightly rip the headliner in the front when removing it for the first time, but it is still in great shape. The rip matches up and is only a few inches long.
When I replaced the glow plugs, I added a correct block heater so I could start the vehicle while in winter storage in my barn. Obviously never driven in winter or until all of the salt was off the roads in Spring. It starts great and runs exactly as a diesel of this vintage should. They all smoke when starting, but running she settles down perfectly and pulls strong all of the way through. The clutch and tranny function as they should and feel great--like a 36 year old truck should.
The tires are checked and need to be replaced. They hold air and I've used them for the 3600 miles I have put on her, but they should be replaced for safety. I've held off because Scout owners have particular views on what size should be put on. It has the stock close range 4 speed, so I was going to put on 30x9.5 R15s on the nice stock rims, but the choice is yours. This is a bone stock vehicle and unlifted. 30x9.5 is the largest tire you can put on a stock Scout without any rubbing. Many put on 31x10.5, but they can rub off road when you are going down and turning. For comparison, the current tires are 235x75 R15. The spare is an older cool looking original. I also have a matching original chrome rim for the spare included in the auction.
I have all of the original books for the vehicle and dealer installed CB radio. I also picked up the Service Manuals and Turbo Diesel manual. I have a complete used correct dealer installed A/C for the vehicle I was planning to install but have not. It's still unopened from the guy a purchased it from on binderplanet.com classifieds, so caveat emptor.
All windows, guages, 12v socket, etc. work. All lights, turn signals etc. work perfectly. If you know these vehicles, you know that can be a pia. Heater adn fan work great. Apart from tires, I would drive this anyway.
Full disclosure, let's get picky. I want you to be happy so feel free to call or ask for more pictures. The drivers high back deluxe seat has a tear on the seat bottom cushion and side as seen in photos. It's orignal so I did not want to change it. It would be a simple patch if you wanted. The other seats look great. The transfer case knob came off--the screw portion came off in the knob. It could be epoxied on, but it came with a hollowed out baseball on it instead which I kind of liked, so never looked into it. The original vinyl floors are great throughout, with a crack higher up on the drivers siide. Seat belts are all there and both seats slide back and forth. The factory roll bar is there and the padding and vinyl covering are great. The drivers door panel has lost the edging and is frayed, but complete. It came with some tape on the bottom, and again its so original I left it as such. The paint is all original and has some chips and thin spots as described, but the patina is perfect so I thought it would be a crime to repaint it. IF anything, this would be a great candidate for a few coats of clear to preserve the patina. The undercarriage is solid, solid, solid with just surface rust. All of the body mounts are great and solid. Unbelievable for a vehicle of this vintage. The driver's end cap has a dent, but the paint was not broken, so why bother. Authenticity in my mind. The passenger side is slightly pushed in--probably from the dealer installed tire carrier. It still latches, so again, why bother. Slight push by driver's side rear wheel well, but again the paint is solid so I left it. One door ding on the passenger door. This is not a trailer queen, but a fantastic original scout.
I've owned lots of classics, but this one gets more attention than any of the others. I hate to consider selling it, but I have a lot of pressing factors. I searched for years to find this vehicle. It's the right color, condition and the only year for the sought after turbo diesel. It runs great and as it should. Apart from new tires, I would drive this anywhere. I realized that in the photo it is hard to see the rip in the drivers seat bottom. It it about a 4 inch rip near the button. If you look close you can see the tear.
I also meant to say apart from the tires, I would drive this anywhere, not anyway.
The vehicle has an extra battery installed. The tray is missing for the second battery, so it is currently tied in. A new tray and bolt is avaialbe new from multiple scouts parts suppliers for less than $75. delivered. I just never got around to it.
