1949 International Harvester Other Additional Info:
We have had this truck for 11 yrs. We have used it for promotion of our Red Wing Shoe Store. It has become synonymous with our location. Every year we bring it in and touch it up as needed. It's still in amazing shape. It was totally redone about 20 yrs ago by a guy and his son in IA. He was a retired engineer who put NOS fenders on it, redid a same year engine, and spent 5 yrs doing it, getting all the SS trim pieces for the grill as he travelled rural IA. He left the 6v (about the only thing I fault him for, there is reason they changed!), added turn signals (the fog lights) added an oil filter, other than that it's all original. I have all the manuals as you can see, extra parts, (only used the points) and replaced the fuel pump in 11 yrs. It starts pretty easy with a 3/4 pull of the choke, a few pumps and push the floor starter button. The 3 on the tree gears are pretty smooth and easy. Top speed is about 45. Runs smooth as silk when warm and pops right over on start. I learned you don't put synthetic oil in these because 'heck it's better right' or to clean them. They like thick paraffin based oils to keep the leaks down. It is clean inside now though! I have lots of close ups but it wouldn't let me load over 24. Send me an email and I'll get you all or take any more you want. It's not perfect but looks great. I had the running boards, lower doors (stickers didn't come off easily) and bed repainted recently. The hood was painted a few years ago. Single stage paint doesn't last a long time! I'd give the overall paint condition about 6-7 on 10 when close up. From 4 feet I'd give it a 9! There are a few places that there are bubbles under the paint. Most have been there for years it just wasn't worth going to a full new paint job. It looks too good. All the gages work. all the lights work (brake lights not sure), dash lights, the only thing I know of is I don't think the pass side wiper works. (separate controls). Someone left it on and i think it is causing a short that is running the battery down but i disconnect if it sits. The cowl and windshield vents work smoothly. If we have to drive in the rain, rainX works better than 40's wipers anyway! The glass is all good. The rubber in the back is very brittle but hanging in there. Windows and doors work better as good as original. Floor mat is new. Brakes work smooth. Don't let the tire wet and lots of tread fool you...the tire tubes hold air perfectly but the tires are checked pretty badly. I didn't want/need to get new ones. To me it's a personal preference thing if you are going to drive it much get the radials, or if you like the Wide whites or something?? Part for these are more rare than Chevy or Ford but PatWalshRestorations has plenty and there are others. They are more unique and cooler looking I think. Let me know any questions. thanks Jeff. I'll hold it for up to a month if pick up is an issue.
