1939 Ford DeLuxe Convertible
Reportedly the same owner for the past 35 years! Rare and desirable steel-bodied convertible Vermilion Red exterior with a black, folding top Brown interior Last year for rare, factory rumble seat option Ford 221 CID Flathead V-8 cylinder engine (85 hp) Three-speed, column-shifting manual transmission Refinished running boards New gas tank and mufflerMotoeXotica Classic Cars is offering another amazing survivor, taking you back to when Batman was the new comic superhero, Lou Gehrig retired from baseball and the movie, “The Wizard of Oz,” graced silver screens nationwide as the storm clouds of war gathered over Europe. This 1939 Ford steel-bodied, DeLuxe convertible is from a Mrs. Barnett and the estate of her son, both of Martin, Tennessee. He reportedly cared for the car for the last 35 years, he was a member of the West Tennessee Antique Car Club and Mr. Barnett owned and operated a lumber company in town and before he died in 2010. Nineteen thirty-nine was the last year a Ford came from the factory with a rumble seat.
Finished in a Vermilion Red (code M1722A) with what appears to be the original, black, folding top, this convertible shows well with only minor signs of wear visible, considering its age. The manual convertible top condition mirrors the finish of the lower body. All the trim is present, complete and displays well with minor flaws and patina from age. The front and rear chrome bumpers fit is tight with a normal original finish. The recently restored black running boards help break up the exterior color. The factory option rumble seat adds to the period “correctness” of this roadster and looks great. There are two stepping points on the right rear fender to facilitate rumble seat ingress and egress. The original, polished 16-inch Ford wheels present and show well and come wrapped with 6.00-16 wide whitewall Silver Arrow tires.
Inside, the brown bench seat looks great. The matching door panels compliment the seat and dashboard is designed to mirror the cabin. All the gauges are in original condition and function as designed. The originally equipped steering wheel shows well, with very little wear. The black factory carpet is complete and compliments the rest of the cabin. Also, this car comes equipped with the original Ford pushbutton AM radio.
Under the hood, the original one-barrel Holley 94 carburetor feeding the Ford 221 CID Flathead V-8, is mated to a three-speed on-the-column manual transmission. The car has a live axle suspension with transverse leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulically-actuated drum brakes (a new feature for 1939), a new gas tank and muffler.
Ford Motor Company introduced its DeLuxe Ford line in 1938 as an upscale alternative to bridge the gap between its base model (usually called Standard) and luxury Lincoln offerings. The DeLuxe Fords of 1938 featured a more sloping hood and ornamental heart-shaped grille. This look was passed on to the standard line for 1939, as the DeLuxe Fords gained sharp V-shaped grilles with vertical bars.
The “Deluxe” name was used intermittently before and after this to specify an upscale trim but the DeLuxe Ford line was differentiated as a separate “marque within a marque” with separate styling and pricing through 1940. During 1939, Ford had five lines of cars – Ford, DeLuxe Ford, Mercury, Lincoln-Zephyr and Lincoln. Ford made 10,422 Deluxe Convertibles and a total of 487,000 vehicles in 1939.
Competition to this car in 1939 included the Mercury Eight Convertible, the Buick Special Convertible and the Oldsmobile Series 60 Convertible.
This ’39 Rumble Seat Convertible is the answer for those looking for a sample of simpler times in America. Top up or down, this Ford is a stunning original example for a ride in the countryside to a family picnic…GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
