“A Gentleman’s Cruiser”

These 1952 Ford F1 Pickups are one of the most desirable and hard to find models of trucks from this era. I am helping my friend Jim, here in San Clemente market his gorgeous one-off creation. If you live in or near San Clemente you have probably seen Gentleman Jim driving around in this wonderful Resto-mod Creation. He has a unique take on the cars from this era, and this certainly is not the first car or truck Jim has built. He and his fabricator buddy have come up with some stellar builds over the years. Jim rarely sells one of his hand-built originals and this is a rare opportunity to buy an incredible truck.

What we have here is a Custom Truck done to the highest level of craftsmanship. Everything you want to make it equivalent to a modern truck; drive-train, brakes and steering are done, while keeping the exterior true to it’s understated yet timeless factory look.

The first thought that came to my mind when I saw this car for the first time several years ago was.. “Self Restraint”... translation, Jim resisted the temptation to go over-the-top on styling and customization. I would maybe add the comment and say “Sophisticated Restraint”... only because there are just so many little touches to this ride that make me want to drive it up to the Valet at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel... so I could watch all the real car guys wander over and ponder why they are so drawn to it. Simple... It looks like a Million Bucks.

The truck market seems to get a little stronger every day. From wild customs to carefully restored OEM-style builds, collectors have officially taken note of America's workhorses. Among those pickups, Ford’s late 40’s to early 50’s are one of the most sought after sub-sectors. With a stout and newly rebuilt 302 matched to a newly rebuilt Ford AOD transmission and subtle custom touches, this 1952 F1 puts an emphasis on modern performance, handling and ride quality while retaining all of what made these trucks great in the first place. The beneficiary of a body-off restoration, this pickup is clean, capable and ready to claim some ribbons at almost any venue you can imagine. If that sounds like your kind of truck, scoot down to San Clemente for a closer look at this amazing F1.

As far as styling goes, few vehicles have aged better than Fords's fifties fleet. This F1 is no exception. Toeing the line between sturdy and refined, the '48-'52 F1 is arguably one of the best looking trucks of all time. Underneath the gorgeous two-stage Dove Gray Paint, a laser straight body is the result of a lot of time and a significant chunk of money. This is one high-dollar paint and body-work, massive amounts of tweaking and blocking and blocking again to this body to make it beyond laser straight. From every angle, the truck offers crisp reflections and excellent panel fitment befitting of a quality show build. The body remains as Ford designed it with nothing shaved or altered in any way. Lowering the body over some new Wheel Smith 15’s and a set of BF Goodrich Radials give it just the right look. This is the kind of high-quality body work and mirror-like paint finish that doesn’t need to be hidden by anything.
Note: There is one quarter size small dent in the passenger side rear quarter panel, it can be seen clearly in the two pictures that follow the wheel pictures in the body section of photos below. We are trying to get a paint-less dent repair to the fender before the auction ends, but they may not be able to correct it. Jim does not want to repaint the fender, so this small flaw may accompany the car. If this is something you feel must be fixed, please bid accordingly.
I took a lot of close-up pictures, check out the shut-lines for exactness, the edges for zero sand paper marks. Every piece of bright work has been treated to the highest level of preparation and plating. You will see no imperfections anywhere on these items.
When Jim bought this little truck it was all original metal and in really great, no rust Southern CA shape, an excellent candidate for a high-end custom restoration. The car was built at the Kansas City Plant, but it was clearly always in a rust free state. The body panels were all solid and straight.
Class, style and elegance from the moment you look at it to the turn of the ignition switch and cruise down the road at 75 mph at 2000 RPM, this thing exudes confidence and refinement.

While this truck has a custom look to it, you will notice on closer examination that the exterior is true to it’s heritage almost all the way. The front end consists of a newer style chrome bumper, placed under a pristine grille. Walk around the corner to the classic chrome mirrors and door handles, combined with gorgeous chromed hood pieces for a visually balanced side profile view. Around the cab, fresh glass and rubber further the showroom-new look. At the rear of the truck, another curve-hugging chrome bumper conforms to the bed, just under the tailgate.
The only thing better than looking at this classic hot rod resto-magic piece is getting behind the wheel and forever changing your mind about what an old truck can be. There is absolutely NOTHING OLD about the way this truck performs and handles out on the road or in the tight corners of a parking lot.
Let me just make this really clear right here before I go any further. This is a BRAND SPANKING NEW TRUCK. Every single inch of this truck has been rebuilt or is brand new. Every single wire, nut and bolt has been attended to. The frame and all of the steering and front to rear-end components were powder coated. If it isn’t powder coated, it’s stainless. It runs like a brand new factory showroom Ford Truck. The alignment, steering and drive-train all perform magnificently. There are ZERO rattles or noises in this rig as you are flying down the road at any speed. This is without doubt one of the nicest vehicles I have ever driven in my life. Period...Exclamation Point!!!
The stock 239 V8 from the factory was replaced by a fully reworked 302 V8 that was built to pack a punch. The Block was Magna-fluxed and decked, the cylinders were bored and honed. New Cam Bearings, Pistons and Rods. The Crank Shaft was ground and the Heads were rebuilt. The Engine was balanced with all new Intake and Exhaust Valves. Rebuilt 9-Bolt Ford Rear-end. Brand new Fisher Radiator.
The block is covered in traditional Ford Blue paint and topped with rebuilt heads. Surrounding the engine is black powder coated inner fender liners. All the small bits under the hood, including the air cleaner are powder coated as well. Yes, even the hood hinges and springs. This engine area is clean and tastefully thought-out, like a gentleman would do it. No bling here, the way we like them.

Crawl underneath this pickup and a pristine, brand new undercarriage comes into view. The floors wear the same quality paintwork as the rest of the body and all of the suspension components are freshly powder coated. The underside of this truck is every bit as impressive as the exterior. In the center, a Ford AOD four-speed automatic handles shifting duties before sending small block power back to a Ford 9-bolt rear, dressed in a satin black cover. The combination of gorgeous black powder-coating and stainless abundance everywhere makes for a visually appealing and exquisite undercarriage. Up front and underneath sports a mid 80’s S10 chassis and front-end, completely reworked and customized for an absolutely perfect fit to the F1 Body. Take a look at all the custom fabrication built-in, for a whole new driving experience to this old classic. The steering is crisp, precise and effortless and it tracks down the road straight and true.
When the roads get curvy or the parking gets tight, the power steering system is a welcome addition, as are the upgraded 4-wheel Power Disc brakes at all corners. The front and rear wear large discs to give you maximum braking power at speed.
Between the doors, an elegant and tastefully finished interior makes this cab a pleasant place to spend time. At the ground level, clean gray carpet is capped off by a newly rebuilt bench seat, wrapped in a luxurious black vinyl with black side-shoulder seat belts that tie into the exterior color nicely. From the driver seat, the view consists of a pristine gauge cluster with factory instrumentation that monitors speed, temperature, battery output, oil pressure and fuel. All gauges were completely rebuilt. A new EZ Wiring harness is visible under the dash. A new fuse block compliments the electrical upgrade.
Clean enough to show at the highest levels; by all means, this is as good as it gets. It’s comfortable enough to drive and powerful enough to put a smile on your face, this F1 offers a little something for every kind of enthusiast, don't miss the chance to put this ’52 F1 in your garage today!
If you were to see this Lil Gray Pickup at Barrett Jackson, you could easily pay $70K for this kind of quality custom truck. This is a NO RESERVE Auction and it will be sold.
This build is documented with a pile of receipts, that accompany the purchase.
As a matter of reference, I have been involved with automotive restorations for over 30 years, my friend Jim probably longer. Most of the work was performed by S&S Enterprises, a father and son custom fabrication and restoration shop here in San Clemente. They do some of the finest builds I have seen in Southern California. I also judge at many local Concour Events in and around Southern CA, have been involved with NCRS and PCA and can assure you this is as nice a restomod as you are likely to find anywhere. The attention to detail is beyond reproach.
Please feel free to call me for additional information. Jim’s number is also available for serious buyers.
