I am selling my 2 door post 1964 Ford Custom 500. Originally a 289 3 speed ("C" code) car, its been retrofitted with a rebuilt 1962 Thunderbird 390 with a 1965 Galaxie toploader 4 speed. Has about 5000 miles on it so far. Sold by Bordelon Ford in Opelousas, Louisiana it was undercoated when new and spent most of its life in North Central Louisiana with the original owners family. I bought it as a rolling body as it had been subjected to fresh water flooding in 2016, and as a result has a Michigan orangeFlood/Salvage - Rebuilt Title. Before I purchased it some remediation had already been done such as carpet removal, power washing, interior restoration and engine removal etc. I am allergic to mold and the fact that this car had been in a freshwater flood, there was no odor then or now. I always wanted to have a 4 speed car and the extreme solidness of this rust free body made this a good base to build the project on.
Prior to getting the car recertified for the road, I had to demonstrate to the local law enforcement inspector that the car had all systems operational and all work was done properly and no stolen parts were used. It was quite a involved procedure and I will include all associatedpaperwork.
· Rebuilt 1962 "Thunderbird Special" 390 stock build with stock cam, installed a hard to find Blue Thunder alloy intake, has 406/390 HP cast iron shorty headers. Edelbrock AVS 650 manual choke carb, Pertronix Flamethrower distributor, Powermax 90 amp alternator (looks like generator)
· 1965 Toploader small input/small output normal ratio trans/bellhousing out of a 65 Ford Galaxie. Brand new Hurst Super Competition shifter. Luk diaphragm clutch. 3.50 open 9 inch rear end. No water contamination was noted in rear end lube, I replaced it anyways during recent rear bearing/seal replacement.
· Champion aluminum radiator and shroud, Spal electric fan controlled by a Derale PWM control assembly. Keeps the temp between 180-200 degrees.
· Manual steering - no slop in box or linkage. 390 Moog front coils and 390 front sway bar installed.
· Manual brakes - 4 wheel drum. Metal lines flushed, rest of system all new components. DOT 5 silicone fluid. Front and rear wheel bearings replaced.
· Wheel Vintiques 15 x 7 steels. Cooper Cobra 225/70/15 tires. Same in trunk.
· New windshield. All other glass factory Ford, interior nice and largely original. Seats in remarkable shape with some sun staining but otherwise nice, new carpet, dash nice, everything works, NOS Sun Super Tach, speedometer works, odometer inoperable. Will include NOS speedo assy. Headliner and rear package tray beautiful. Elected to replace clock and missing radio with blanking plates. Ironically still has radio antenna. Needs door seals. Aftermarket speakers were added to the doors years ago. Heater blower, 2 speed wiper and washer motor, headlight switch, turn signal switch etc were rebuilt or replaced and all wiring was disconnected and cleaned and greased as needed. Installed lookalike choke knob. Everything works, dashlights etc.
· Body is clean, straight and rust free. If you know 64s you know where they rust. There is no rust in any of those areas. Rockers, floors rear extension panels, trunk floor all rust free. Underside super clean, No rust holes or anything close. Been under this car and really poked around, it is clean.
· Paint is mostly original weathered Wimbledon White with areas of panel touchup due to past dents, but never rust repair. Has a lot of weathering and stone pecking on the horizontal surfaces, personally I like it. See example picture of fender.
· Rear bumper does have pinholes due to years of mud buildup behind the brackets.
· 406/390 HP factory cast iron headers going into a stainless dual 2.5" system with crossover and Flowmaster Flow FX stainless mufflers.
Runs and drives down the road great! Just had it out cruising this weekend in 90 degree weather and was stopped in multiple back ups stayed nice and cool!
A great cruiser, not a hot rod but fun to drive with a fair amount of low end torque. With everything manual, a car you actually have to drive. With the 3.50 rear end it can keep up at highway speeds. Toploader on 4-3 downshift above 40 will have a slight synchro notchiness (no grind) but other than that is quiet upshifting and downshifting through the gears. I do have a rebuilt duplicate toploader available just in case the syncro got worse but never has. New Hurst competition shifter makes it shift great! Will include original Ford shifter.
Last time it was listed I got many questions as to if it could be driven from my place to wherever. Could it be driven "home"? The answer would be yes. Would I do that? No. It'sstill an old car and nothing is guaranteed.
No, I won'tstop the auction.
This Custom 500 is not show material but a great car that could be driven everyday. You agree to buy it in as is/where is condition. I tried to be as comprehensive and honest asI could in the description but I probably forgot some items. Please ask questions and please don'twaste my time and yoursby not being a serious bidder.
