1934 Ford 40 Coupe

In March of 1932 the Ford Motor Company introduced the new Model 40 V8. V8 engines had been used for many years but they were expensive to produce and drove the cost of the vehicle into territory that only a few could afford. The cylinder block casting process was complicated. Ford, however, found a way to mass-produce the V8 engines making them the first low-priced V8 engines on the market.

For consignment a custom-built hot rod version of a Model 40 Ford. Nothing but the best for this build, utilizing the original steel from good ol' Henry with no rot. Some fancy machining for the Cadillac engine, and a who's who of quality aftermarket parts for this hot rod. Throughout its history it had some racing in there, once donning an Olds 394 with a six pack and blower setup and running at Maple Grove and Beaver Springs. Our current consigner obtained the hot rod and rebuilt the entire car to his specifications which speak for themselves. Now a true hot rod with a history.

Exterior
Consigner states there is some surface rust under the exterior black paint, however he is reluctant to fix it as the wonderful patina that has accumulated over time will be "ruined". So, it's draped in an older respray of black. The curvaceous shield grille with its vertical ribs presents beautifully and has a clean and shiny surround. Chromed front suspension is seen as a highlighter to the front end. The top has been chopped and exterior gaps are all good. Fenders shaved off revealing the open tires and wheels and saving on the ever-present weight. Some custom signage sponsorship has been hand painted on and we can see it was a A-Gasser class car. On back below the curved trunk lid and rear of the car is a simple chromed push bar protecting the body, and chromed rear differential case below. Red steel wheels have deep dish trim rings and moon cap centers all shiny and bright. 215/60R15's are upfront, and on the back large 8.20-15 cheater slicks wrapping the big sexy steel and chrome.

Interior
A swing of the suicide door and we are in two tone red and black leather heaven! Red inserts for the seats (bench) and door panels with some nifty tuck and roll pattern, and smooth surrounds and bolsters in black leather. Seat belts have been added on, and the bench floats in nice black carpeting. The dash is a metal customized setup with panels for white faced SW gauges with chromed bezels, and pinstripe flourishes hand painted in red surrounds throughout. A wonderfully aged and paint peeled bakelite steering wheel is fronting this dash and has a center 2 spoke bullet style mounting to the column.

Drivetrain
Courtesy of a 1955 Cadillac 365 cubes have been bored .060 over and mated with rebuilt 1962 390ci Caddy heads. Fresh rebuilt Rochester 2 bbl carburetors in triplicate are now atop, and a T5 5-speed manual transmission is on back. A panhard bar rear axle with Winters Quick Change 3.50 gears is the bangin' setup to spin the tires. A shout to the engine detailing with blue valve covers, white Cadillac Badging, and white hot headers ending quickly in an open side pipe. Make some noise!

Undercarriage
With chromed transverse leaf sprung suspension in front for all the world to see, and a 4 bar setup with coil overs on back the undercarriage is presenting nicely, all structurally sound and custom built. 1954 Ford 3/4 ton front drum brakes are now installed, and the rear brakes are finned drums.

Drive-Ability
A surprising amount of interior room, nice comfy seats and all buttoned up interior, this car is ready to roll. And indeed, it did with a quick lighting fire, and loud takeoff, it throws you back in the bench seat, and has the ability for you to look alive and awake while driving it. Good solid braking, and a smooth cruise along with a fully functioning interior is a real plus for this old rodder.

A little patina, a little chrome, a little drivetrain spice and a little from various donors and we have the formula for a true hot rod. Beg borrow and steal to get it just right baby bear, and this car exemplifies just that with a meticulous build and attention to detail. One of the highlight rodders we have in house presently. Gotta love the exterior signage too!
