1966 Ford Mustang GT
Let's just admit it, the Ford Mustang is a sexy car. It's been heating up the streets with its sleek look, powerful engine, and confident owners since its first model in 1964.5. The Mustang seems to just get better and better with each new model, but there's something uniquely exciting about a classic . In 1966 a K code offering was available which used a 289ci V8 which produced 271 HP.
For consignment a rarer version of the 1966 Mustang hardtop with a K code 289ci V8 and presenting in Springtime Yellow. This car was under 1 family ownership from new until 2011 where it came north from Georgia to Maryland at which time it received a fresh coat of the yellow, and new badges, decals and trim. All else retains its originality, with its interior, drivetrain, and original mileage at 9,389!
Exterior
In full GT configuration with the upgraded chrome styled steel wheels, larger tires (205/75R14), and lower rocker black stripe. Also, a different gas cap with the GT badge is on to remind you of the car you are driving when you fill it with hi test. There is no rust seen on the exterior of this car, and it presents with straight steel, and well minded gaps. On the driver's door there are two burn marks supposedly from a wire insulation in the garage it was stored, melting on to that surface. Overall paint is driver quality, chrome is good, and minor evidence of prior bodywork at the front of the passenger's fender, driver's rear rocker, and wheel arches on both quarter panels. Overall a great 54 year old body that makes this writer green with envy.
Interior
Ordered new and still has the original pony interior. Interior door panels are factory condition with tuck and roll and smooth vinyl, and chromed door actuators and window cranks with just a hint of wood appliqu on the door actuator. Good looking front low back buckets with more stitched inserts, and tuck and roll tops with smooth bolsters all in black vinyl. The rear bench matches and not to forget the pony embossed option on all the seat backs, an optional offering for this year's GT. Also, a nice center console with more wood appliqu, and some aluminum banding with the Hurst shifter in the center. The dash also painted black has dual wood appliqu ovals one to house the instrument cluster, and the other for the glove box door. Black carpet is on the floors and a tight black headliner is above.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a numbers matching 289ci Hipo V8 sporting a casting number C5AE-6105E, (1965-1968 289ci V8 Hipo V8), a casting date of 6A12, (January 12th 1966), and has a complete VIN stamp on the passenger side of the block. Moving up top we see correct factory cast iron Hipo headers, correct #19 cavity castings in the heads, correct chrome valve covers, a correct 4bbl cast iron intake (C6OE-9425-B), and a correct Autolite 4100 4bbl carburetor with a C6ZF-C id tag and a 6ZC stamping on the carburetor body. On the back, is the numbers matching 4-speed top loader transmission, (C5AR-1008-D), with a casting date of K21, October 21st 1965, which pushes power rearward to a Ford 9-inch 3.50 Equalock rear axle.
Undercarriage
Mostly rust free except for the toe kicks at the point where they intersect with the lower front wheel wells I see some rust at the seams of these surfaces. All else is just peachy, with solid black floorpans and frame. Independent coil springs up front, and leaf springs on the rear along with front disc brakes and rear drums. A dual Flowmaster exhaust is now installed.
Drive-Ability
With plenty of power this car is a thrill to drive. Amazing how much more acceleration this car has compared to its lesser counterparts with lesser engines. It shifted smoothly and was able to cruise at highway speed effortlessly. I noticed the fog lights are inoperable as well as the radio.
A fine example of a low mileage 1966 GT. Paint looks nice, the interior is totally pony original, and the center console adds great value. A racing stripe for the rocker, and new badges, and we are ready to roll.
