The Ford Mustang along with the Falcon in which the very first Mustangs received the same power plant was slotted into the compact car arena and was designed and built under the direct command of Lee Iacocca. The Mustangs styling with its longer hood and short deck lid proved to be an instant success and brought an onslaught of competition. The first generation from 1964-1973 offered three different body styles; the hard-top, convertible and later the first year was the fastback which was extremely popular and sold very well. As the Mustang gained popularity, Ford offered different engine options and packages that could be purchased.
