1964 Ford Mustang Convertible Additional Info:
The Mustang met with quite an enthusiastic response when it debuted in mid-'64, as the car buying public was drawn to the idea of an exceedingly sporty and lightweight four-seater that ably bridged the gap between the cramped confines of a sports car and the often uninspired driving experience most larger vehicles offered at the time. This 1964 ½ Ford Mustang convertible was one of the first on the scene and it pairs its timeless vintage appearance with a vital engine to make for a great time behind the wheel.
You'll immediately be taken by the visual impact of this classic. It's been the beneficiary of a skilled and exacting restoration and now wears a coat of vibrant red on its exterior that confers a properly authentic appearance, being a very close relative to the Poppy Red selection on the factory color chart when the car debuted. The paint is in fine form, sporting a nice shine and, as you take a lap around the car, you'll notice plenty of attention to detail - even gaps surround the body panels, the front and rear bumpers show clean chrome with no major flaws and the brightwork on display is consistently sharp. While your initial daydreams upon first glance at this classic will likely include tooling down the road with the top down, during less forgiving weather, the power white convertible top is a great visual complement to the rest of the car, and it seals well and raises promptly to protect you from the elements.
The well-restored interior will take you back to a much simpler time. The red vinyl bucket seats in front and bench seat in back present well and still have plenty more miles of service left in them, while the matching carpet below is in top form. The view from behind the aftermarket woodgrain wheel in this Pony is striking - the fully functional gauges in the instrument cluster look nearly new and are joined by a signature high-end Mustang interior feature of the era: a factory Rally Pack that positions both a tachometer and clock on the column. A fresh, uncracked dash pad runs the width of the cabin. Having air conditioning on board in a drop top is a welcome but often overlooked amenity and the aftermarket underdash unit blows nice and cold to keep things comfortable. In back, the trunk area is neat and tidy, lined in signature Ford plaid, with nothing but solid and well-prepped steel in view.
The engine bay holds to the same high standards displayed by the rest of the car, and the 302 cubic ATK crate engine at its center offers a substantial power advantage over any of the engine options when this '64 1/2 debuted - fed by an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb and running in top form, the motor is good for 300 horses and 336 lb-ft of torque. A matte black Edelbrock air cleaner pairs with the scrubbed look of the components beneath the hood to make for a very pleasing sight. Up front, an aluminum radiator is now in place, teaming with an electric fan to provide enhanced temperature control during more demanding driving situations and, in the interest of increased reliability, the gas tank was recently replaced. Power steering and a quartet of recently serviced power disc brakes bring easy maneuverability and plenty of low effort stopping ability as this iconic ride cruises on its set of 15" chrome Pony wheels wrapped with BF Goodrich red wall tires.
