1966 Ford Mustang -- Additional Info:
The early Mustang fastback, or 2+2, is one of those rare cases where a car with a fixed roof is more valuable than its convertible counterpart. And this 1965 Ford Mustang fastback lives right at the top of the early Mustang desirability list, with awesome metallic dark plum paint, a strong-running 351 Windsor, and the perfect high-performance look that defines the first Mustangs.
You know it's got to be straight if it's a dark color, and this car wears it's finish very well. It's not perfect, but the paint job presents very well, with no ripples or waves, and the House of Kolors Dark Plum Metallic is so vibrant under our lights it makes some of the other cars in our showroom look almost gray. No joke. It's a higher driver-quality finish that shows very well and with the white GT350 stripe along the rockers, it looks brilliant. The fastback looks particularly attractive in this unique shade and with the GT-style fog lamps in the grille and the Bullet-style side mirrors at each flank, this one has a predatory look that escapes most early Mustangs; it's like the evil twin of the pony car family. Nicely chromed bumpers fore and aft, bright stainless window moldings, clean taillight trim, and a proper Mustang gas cap all add up to a car that attracts more than its fair share of attention out on the road.
The interior is very much in line with a 1965 Mustang, with black standard buckets, a correct three-spoke wheel, and an authentic vibe. The seat covers and carpets look pretty recent and are in great shape, and with supportive materials under the seats they're all-day comfortable. The five-gauge instrument panel was GT-spec in 1965, and this one is filled with what are likely the original units with crisp clear markings. The dash is slightly warped but free of any cracks and likely the original unit, and the carpets underneath are plush and protected by matching floor mats. What is likely the original AM/FM radio is still in place but not currently operational so an upgrade is due here, and we know just the right place: stashed away in the glove compartment so as to not cut into (quite literally) the originality of this Mustang. The fold-down rear seat makes the fastback practical as well as stylish and the trunk is finished with a correct plaid mat.
This is a T-code car, so the 351 Windsor V8 under the hood is obviously not original, but it's one of the best motors Ford ever made and we're delighted by the upgrade under the hood of this fastback. The small block fires right up and runs superbly, nicely detailed with Ford Blue valve covers, a smaller open air cleaner replete with correct '351' decals, and Ford Blue engine enamel on the block itself. Even all the wires were nicely organized through the HEI distributor and there's a big aluminum radiator up front keeping the whole show nice and cool. It's linked to a 3-speed automatic transmission and an 8-inch rear end with reasonable gears inside, so it's an easy highway car and still plenty punchy around town. A newer dual exhaust system with "Cherry-Bomb" style mufflers gives it a little more punch than that traditional Ford V8 sound and the floors are in great shape despite not being heavily undercoated. Power front disc brakes combine with newer front suspension components including control arms, shocks, and sway bar, while the rear is suspended on original leaf springs. Slick 15-inch Legend Series Mustang wheels are an awesome performance look and carry staggered 205/60/15 front and 225/60/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A radials all around.
This is one of the coolest 2+2 fastbacks we've featured in a long time, with the color combo really putting it over the top. Great looks, strong mechanicals, and, of course, the big performance look. Hard to go wrong here. Call today!
