1950 Ford Custom Deluxe

World War II put automobile production on hold. Production ceased on February 10, 1942 and resumed in 1946. When production began, most vehicles offered by marques were basically carried over from pre-war development. It was not until 1949 when Ford began offering new designs. They featured simple lines that were clean and well-integrated into the body. In the front was a dramatic and artful bullet nosed grille.

The era of pontoon fenders and high-riding automobiles was over, and Ford broke out of the gate with a smaller, stunningly stylish car that blended militaristic themes with slab-sided functionality. This Custom Deluxe Sedan offered for consignment is a fine cruiser that may need some TLC in the body department as it is showing some rust issues. A new interior, and a fine running engine are its assets, along with the new Ford design of a more integrated body, and rounded design.

Exterior
All steel with attached chrome upfront sporting a center bullet style ring and building on this design to complete the entire grille. Chrome is in fair condition showing some scratching on the rear bumper, dulling on the front, and minor dimpling and the beginnings thereof. Steel shows areas of invasive rust, particularly as we look down the A pillar at the back of the front fenders, and on to the rockers shows rust running the entire length. Black paint still retains its shine, just a bit pf patina, and some scratches and chips throughout. This car has one of the coolest hood ornaments, with chrome shaped like a speeding train and topped with clear plastic in art deco style. All 4 corners are the steel wheels painted red with chrome deep dish rings around the outside bordering the wide whites, which are new reproduction style radials.

Interior
A total redux inside here now showing in white vinyl with red cloth inserts. A split bench in front, and full bench in the back. The seating now has seat belts installed. Seats and door panels are all very clean. A shining example of the original metal dash with exterior matching curved design in pristine red, houses a large centered speedo, with surrounding oil, battery, temp, and fuel gauges. A central clock is above an aftermarket FORD AM/FM/Cassette Radio. Very plush red carpet is below in good condition, and above is a white headliner nice and tight with no stains.

Drivetrain
239 cubes of flathead V8 is under the hood. It is topped by a simple 2-barrel carburetor and miniature air cleaner in chrome. A 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive is mounted to the back of the V8.

Undercarriage
Some of the rust in invasive form has taken its toll on the inner rocker panels, and surface rust is seen throughout. It appears to have had new floorpans installed as these are rust free. Dual exhaust with glasspack mufflers runs the length, and the front suspension was lowered 3". This also has new shocks, and springs. A newer external fuel pump moves gas from the poly fuel tank to the mill. Noted is a 12-volt system to run all the electrics.

Drive-Ability
This car fired right up, ran smoothly, and drove very nicely. Despite its body panel issues, it is a great cruiser, with a very comfortable interior. No power steering makes getting in and out of tight places a little strenuous, but once the car is rolling it steers surprisingly easy. Good brakes, and functional exterior lighting was a plus.

Our consigner had this car for the last 15 years, during which time there was some work done, particularly on the interior of the car, and mechanically maintained. The rust is an issue, however, has not invaded the car to the point where it is unsafe, but would be wise to address it sooner rather than later. A nice cruiser for a fair price, and you can own a piece of Ford history which changed overall design industry wide even on the foreign market.
