1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Sportsroof 429 SCJ
1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Sportsroof 429 SCJ with Drag Pack
VIN Number – 1F05J109488
Mileage: 46,621, although the mileage is changing daily, as I am driving it around, yet. Not sure if this is the correct mileage, as I am not the original owner.
This 1971 Mustang, 429 SCJ is in good condition and is one of only 531 Super Cobra Jets built, of the 149,679 mustangs produced that year. One of the most recognizable featuresof the '71-'73 Mustangs is the optional Ram Air hood, with dual NASA type hood scoops. I have the factory build sheet and Marti Auto Works Deluxe report and the Marti Report shows this car was ordered on July 13, 1970 and built on September 11, 1970. The VIN number is 1F05J109488. I have the clear title for the car.
This car was ordered by the Ford Motor Company, PRD ENG-EEE BLDG 21500 Oakwood, Dearborn, Michigan. 48121. Order type: Test Vehicle. DSO Item #: 4134. Dealer #: 889276J. I am not sure what Ford used the car for, perhaps to show the car around the country. On the bottom of the window sticker is price deduction of $71.44 and is noted: FDAF Waved, Intra-Company Allowance for Ford Marketing Corporation.
The VIN number is missing from the dash (it was missing before I purchased it). The VIN number is stamped on both fender aprons and the left fender has a small notch at the fender apron stamping and there is a steel plate, riveted to the left door pillar, with the correct VIN number. The plate is a little bigger than a VIN tag and the top of the plate reads, Assigned Identification Plate, the center of the plate is stamped 1F05J109488, which is the correct VIN number as on the Title, along with the fender apron stampings, The bottom of the plate reads, State of Illinois 023337 Illinois State Police .
This is an original 429 Super Cobra Jet V-8, backed by a C 6 Automatic transmission. This Mustang Mach 1 Sportsroof was ordered with a 429-4V CJ Ram Air engine, Bright Blue Metallic exterior, with blue Clarion Knit/Corinthian vinyl bucket seats and blue interior, 3.91 Traction-Lok axle ratio and a C 6 Select shift Cruse-O-Matic transmission. It was also ordered with a drag- pack, F70x14 wide oval belted, BSW, Raised White Lettered tires, power steering, power front disc brakes, rear window electric defrost, and an AM radio. It also has a color keyed Spoiler and Bumper, color keyed racing mirrors, Grille Sport lamps, competition suspension, trim rings and hub caps, and high back bucket seats.
I just had the floor pans professionally replaced, the rest of the under carriage looks solid. He also painted the front valance, front spoiler and a new hood and installed the NASA scoops from the original hood. He replaced the radiator core support and installed new correct motor mounts. He replaced the distributor with a correct rebuilt distributor, rebuilt the carburetor, installed a new correct fuel pump, drained and cleaned the gas tank. I installed a new Ram Air, air cleaner, because it was missing. The car has a lot of new parts installed on it.
The car has four new Cooper Cobra Radial G/T Tires, P225x70x14 on original Ford wheels, with original trim rings and hub caps. The spare tire and wheel is not original. I installed new carpeting, padding and a new package tray and the rest of the original interior looks very good. The steering wheel has a couple of cracks or separations. I also have vacuum hose and other miscellaneous parts that will go with the car.
Not upgraded or replaced yet are the front disk and rear drum brakes and the exhaust seems solid yet. The paint looks good and it shines up really nice, but there is some paint bubbling on the rocker panels, rear wheel wells and behind the rear wheels. There is a little paint chipping in a few spots, along with the upper part of the doors, near the window moldings. It might sound bad, but it’s not that bad. Pretty solid car and a fun driver. Looks good at car shows and cruse nights.
The rear axle is the original 3.91 Traction Lok, which when either locking axles were ordered on a Mustang in 1971, that is what designated it as a Super Cobra Jet car. The drive shaft looks to be original also. The engine block stamping designate it as either a CJ or SCJ engine. The intake manifold, the heads and the transmission are Cobra Jet parts and not Super Cobra parts, but the correct parts are still available, if you are going to bring it back to its original form. This is a fun car the way it is.
The following, is a list of drive train components and their Ford stamping numbers.
