A luxury Ford built to fit in with Europe's elite, that's the legacy of the 1963 Ford Thunderbird Principality of Monaco special edition. One of only 2,000 ever built, this example looks distinguished today, and so you'll attract crowds before you tell the tale of this loaded luxury landau coupe. Ford wanted to show off its performance image in 1963. They even entered some modified Falcons in the Monte Carlo Rally. Lee Iacocca wanted to promote this to... the fullest, but he knew the compact cars didn't fit in at the world's richest destination. That's how this Principality of Monaco special edition was born. It was rumored Princess Grace (our Grace Kelly) was consulted for the special touches. These are Corinthian White color cars with a Rose Beige vinyl roof. And speaking of the roof, a car of royalty would, of course, be the real landau roof model. The result was a Ford that's worthy of the Riviera. After all, these bullet-nose T-birds are a true styling marvel. The third-generation cars were more Lincoln than Ford, and they were happy to showcase it. You see it in all the styling touches like the premium hardtop profile, fender skirts, and how the chrome front bumper is an integral part of the styling. Plus, there's the crisp trim line that starts in front of the headlights, runs the full length of the body (expertly integrating the door handles,) and not stopping until it reaches the afterburner-style taillights. So it's great to see this unique edition still looking so correct. Inside, the special touches continue. The pearl white leather seats combined with Rose Beige on the carpeting and dash pad offer the same color theme as the exterior â€" and this full uniform package inside and out shows true premium style. Beautiful wood-like trim flows across the doors, dash, and down the center console. It makes the special bright plaque in the middle of the console (identifying this a #1483 of 2,000) a true focal point of the car. More than just special, this is a great classic luxury cruiser with the features you want, including power windows, a swing-away steering column, and a power-adjusting driver's seat. Ford's large 390 cubic-inch V8 and a four-barrel carburetor created the right kind of power for the Thunderbird. Advertised with 300 horsepower and plenty of torque on tap, it moves this cruising coupe around with ease. The engine bay looks quite stock, and it can easily fit in with the regal personality of this car. After all, it has a golden air topper and matching valve covers. Plus, you'll see good details like sound insulation and wiring that tell you this classic was cared for correctly. It fires up nicely, and with an authoritative hum out of the dual exhaust that seems perfect for this mature T-Bird. The three-speed automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes all work in harmony to help keep the ride luxurious.
