GR Auto Gallery is pleased to present this 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable Hardtop Convertible for purchase. One of the coolest classics ever made looks like a classic mid 50's poodle skirt cruiser, but it's more than that. This is the first mass produced retractable hardtop convertible ever made. It takes the top, folds just a part of the front of the roof, and retracts the piece under the lid of the trunk. It uses three roof drive motors... driving four lift jacks, four door-lock motors, ten solenoids, four locking mechanisms, and 610ft of wiring. While having the top down renders the trunk almost completely useless, the top mechanics are actually surprisingly reliable considering how much is at work. This is one of those great classics that truly stand out from the rest. The 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Retractable offered here is a two owner car and has been in the hands of the 2nd owner for the last 45 plus years. The car remains highly original with some selective cosmetic attention over time including a repaint, carpet, dash pad and seat upholstery, none of these being recent. The car remains in its original color combination of Colonial White over two tone blue interior and shows very well. Areas of the car that remain original are the steel dash fascia, steering wheel, radio, knobs, the original perforated headliner, door panels, interior trim panels, exterior trim, original stickers inside of glove box door, and the majority of its working components. The frame underside appears to be untouched, dry and in great original condition. Mechanically, this car is a great runner and a proven driver. It is powered by its 292 V8 engine, automatic transmission and rear wheel drive. The retractable hard top under our tests works flawlessly in both directions. The Ford Fairlane garners much attention and is well respected around the world. The retractable hard top is still considered and engineering feat of greatness especially considering the times. These cars will always remain popular and collectible.
