1939 Ford Other Additional Info:
Up for sale is a very nice example of a '39 ford 2-door Tudor. The 1939 Ford is on of the most classic of the American automobiles. Just a few short years after the Model A, the '39 has very curvy and ornate fenders with a double-"wing" for the inset almond-shaped reflector headlamps, and a fluid flaring into the running boards. This was the last year of some very interesting and creative features, and the year before some "advancements" that were actually cost-cutting changes made by Ford. The '39 has a crank-out windscreen that allows better ventilation AND keeps the windshield defrosted. This is the year before window vents were introduced, so all 4 windows actually roll back a couple of inches - horizontally BEFORE rolling down vertically! Each window basically has its own built-in vent (to let out all that cigarette smoke that everyone thought was so cool in the 1930's!) The 3-speed, synchronized transmission is floor mounted... column shift was introduced in 1940. The power plant is the incredibly smooth 60-hp flat-head V8. Many industries used these motors up into the 1990's because they are SO steady and dependable. The engine is in great condition, always starts right up even on the coldest mornings, and runs great. It has good oil pressure and good compression with no major oil leaks. The engine is stock, with the exception of a 12-volt generator (which still looks stock) and a MSD electronic distributor (no points to mess with). The electrical system has been changed over to 12 volt, with all the gauges still operating on 8 Volts. The speedometer, odometer, all lights and accessories work great. The amp meter works, the fuel and oil gauges can be finicky; fuel gauge usually not and oil usually does. Since the odometer and tripmeter work, I usually just fill it up every 150-200 miles. There are aftermarket engine temperature and vacuum gauges located low on the right side of the dash. All the gauge dimmer lights work, as do the dome lights. There is only one glass and chrome teardrop shaped tail light, just like it left the factory in Dearborn in 1939! The transmission shifts great, all the synchros work, and it goes down the road quietly. I believe gearing is probably in the 4:11 or 3:90's range... it will cruise down any highway with no problems, and will go down the freeway at 55-60 all day long. I have never seen it climb over 180 degrees even on warm days. Although it's a pre-WWII car, I would not hesitate to drive this across the county, keeping in mind (a) it will be an adventure! and (b) you will not be cruising at 80 mph (over 3/4 of the US roads in 1939 were unimproved dirt, and the highest speed limit was 50!)
The body is in amazing condition, with absolutely NO rust. This car was originally from CA. It's very straight, with only a few small dings in the rear fenders. The paint looks like the original lacquer, and will always take a polish and shine right up. There's a flat spot in the paint below and to the rear of the fuel fill spout, but it's down low and not tremendously noticeable. The stainless steel trim is all present and in nice shape. The chrome is mostly very nice, with the exception of two of the bumper guards that could stand to be refinished. The car has nice set of US-made Goodyear bias-ply wide whitewalls with 95% or better tread.
The interior is probably 95% or better as well, with original wood-grain dash and factory gauges, all in wonderful condition. Seats and headliner are in great condition, with no damage whatsoever. The carpet is nice, covered with original-style rubber mats. The windshield wipers are vacuum driven, and also work great. The head-lights, running lights, parking lights switch and horn are all in their factory location in the center of the big, beautiful steering wheel. When you turn the wheel, the center controls remains stationary (state of the art for '39!!). Even the large duel trumpet horns work great (and are super loud!)The large trunk is carpeted throughout and clean. Under the truck floor panels is the factory jack, irons & cables, and located in the back of the trunk is the spare tire/wheel. Also included is a nice car cover.
Car has an original WA 1939 plate, and I have clear WA State Title. I am located north of Seattle near I-5. I can deliver the car to a shipper of your choice located in Skagit or Whatcom counties (cities of Mount Vernon, Burlington, Bellingham, Sedro-Woolley). I can deliver farther for additional. I can also e-mail more pictures of the body, engine and undercarriage (while car is on lift); just e-mail me a request.
Terms of sale: I would like a small deposit ($500) via paypal within a day or two of auction end, with the remainder due upon pickup/delivery to shipper. I can hold the car for a few weeks, possibly longer, until you can make arrangements to ship/pick up.
Thanks for looking, and have a great day!
