1947 Ford Super Deluxe Station Wagon Woody
We have a lot of really neat and interesting cars over the years. But very few have had the character of an "Iron Mountain Ford Woody". It is the epitome of "Americana" in the middle of the last century. When you think 1950's Southern Cali... you think of girls in swimsuits, guys with surf boards, and the iconic "Woody"! This is just a cool car that commands a smile and thumbs up where ever it is driven. Our particular car is a very original and unmolested example of what can only be described as, a piece of rolling art. This car was built by true craftsmen and showcases the precision ofmaster woodworkers of years ago. It is truly beautiful.
In the mid to late 1940's, Detroit automakers were reinventing themselves and the auto industry in general after the end of WWII. Up until this point, most cars constructed utilized a great amount of wood in their construction. The Ford Motor Company owned and logged hundreds of thousands of acres in theUpper Peninsula of Michigan. A massive sawmill complex was constructed, as was a powerful hydroelectric plant in Iron Mountain, Michigan back in the 1920's for this very reason. The saw mill produced huge quantities of lumber for wooden automobile framework, floorboards, and wheels.Ironically, the wood scrap left after this process was turned into a completely different, yet well known product. Ford charcoal briquettes. Later renamed Kingsford, after a family member of the Ford family that had secured the real estate acreage utilized for logging.By the mid-1930s, Ford was marketing “Picnic Kits” containing charcoal and portable grills directly from Ford dealerships. Why is this important???This is the location of where the body of our car was milled and constructed.
The car has had an interesting history. It was a special order placed by a Mexican Government official. He took delivery onMay 31, 1947 at a Ford dealership in Mexico for the sum of$10,943 pesos. This is why the speedometer and odometer are read in KM instead of MPH. The car remained south of the border until sometime in the mid to late 1950's when it moved north to a new home in San Diego, California. We have knowledge that the car 2ndand 3rdowners were two So Cal surfers, one of which worked for Sea World. It was evidently acquiredby Sea World San Diego for promotional use. While there, the woody was the center of attention at the main surf shop, as well as being used periodically for VIP transportation around the park. After it’s tenure with Sea World, showing 96,000 kms she moved on to, we believe, two more times. Both owners were "Woody" collectors and continued to preserve the car and maintain it to high standards. The last one brought it to the East Coast several years ago.
It is believed that all the wood on the car is original and is in very good condition. Currently the odometer shows just over 98,000 kms. According to a previous owner,"The woodwork has some unique details not commonly found on Iron Mountain Fords. There is a lip over the running board on the bottom of the front doors.” Mechanically, the car has had some period fitted upgrades that were added when the car was in Southern California way back the 1950's. The engine is believed to be the original 59A Ford Flathead block. The cylinder heads were replaced with a pair of “Edelbrock Finned Aluminum” heads. The carburetor set up was switch out for twin“Stromberg's” set up, and “Isky Cam” is believed to have been fitted at that time. We have understanding from someone who knew the car in the late '50's that all of this was in place then. It has been converted to a 12 volt system.Only the original radio and the horn have not been converted. There is a modern radio fitted in the glove compartment with two removable speakers behind the third row seats. The engine fires right up and have great power. The car is a 3 speed on the tree. Braking comes by way of the original four wheel drum set up, and they work surprisinglywell.
The body and paint on the car is very presentable. A paint meter around the car shows uniform readings. While the paint is not fresh, it presents with a good luster, displaying only very minor imperfections from age and use. The undercarriageis incrediblyclean with no evidence of any previous repair work or issues. We see no evidence that this car has had any prior corrosion issues, either presently or previously. This is what you would expect from a Southern California car. The vinyl roof is correct pattern and intact. The interior is clean, crisp, and all correct. The dash is finished in a faux oak pattern with all the original gauges. The very early molded plastic trim on the dash is in great condition and original to the car.It was common, for these trim pieces to perish over the years from being sun baked. The main visual draw of the interior is the stunningwood work throughout. The roof of the car is a true work of art. Reminiscentof vintage wooden boats of the era, it draws the same comment from everybody who sees it. "Wow, that's incredible!"
We proudly offer this motorcar to its next owner to continue the story by writing their own chapter in the biography of this "Woody's" life.
