Compact and muscular-looking, this 1969 Ford Bronco is a pivotal precursor to the modern SUV. With no such classification at the time of its debut, this nimble pit bull of a vehicle was lauded not for its errand-running convenience, but for its practical durability and outstanding maneuverability on less than forgiving terrain, featuring an unusually tight steering radius and substantial wheel travel that allowed it to handle bumps and divots in stride. Nearly 50 years later, it's in good form and would be a great acquisition for the car enthusiast looking for a rugged open-air fun machine with an abundance of retro charm.
Back in the day when this Bronco rolled out, it was classified as an Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) and in keeping with that label, it's got a very "no-nonsense" look to it, that comes as no surprise considering its purpose-built origin that mandated its practical utility in handling uneven conditions and even handling snow-plowing chores. In some ways, it's among the most original concepts that Ford ever brought to market - featuring a body, as well as frame and suspension, that were all its own. Its red paint gives it a fresh and vital look that's contrasted effectively by its sturdy black front bumper and push bar, as well as the fresh-looking stone guards that surround its wheel wells. Step around to the side and you'll see right away where that terrain accommodating prowess comes from - its stance and generously proportioned wheel wells give it an abundance of wheel clearance, something it comes by naturally, as its aggressive elevation stops well short of excess that would label this venerable workhorse as a novelty.
The black vinyl interior features a practical ruggedness that's in perfect lockstep with this ORV's vibe, but make no mistake - it's a welcoming environment to step into. The low backed bucket seats up front remain in good condition, with plenty of padding and no visible tears across their surfaces, and straddle a center console featuring a lockable compartment and cupholders for passengers in front and back. The dash area is an expanse of very clean steel painted to match the exterior and harboring original gauges in the instrument cluster that are assisted by a trio of aftermarket counterparts residing just below the Pioneer CD stereo system also offering Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. There's some useful storage space in the back, just behind the rear seating, with a pair of speakers sitting tight to the sides just behind the rear wheel wells and floor and walls that appear to have weathered the years impressively well.
The 302 cubic inch V8 sitting under the hood is fully up to the task of taking you on future adventures. Topped with an Edelbrock carb, it's starting easily and sounding great. It's paired with a 4-speed manual transmission to provide just the hands on driving experience you'd want in a rugged ride like this, while power steering and power brakes add an element of low-effort civility. This open air classic sits on a set of 15" steel wheels that are outfitted with BF Goodrich All Terrain T/As.
With its open-air configuration and retro good looks, this 1969 Ford Bronco is a unique, strong performing vintage off-roader that would look great in any garage and no doubt turn heads on the road. Call today!
