Do you like droptops? Come by MotoeXotica Classic Cars and take a peek at this 1951 Ford Custom Deluxe Convertible. This gorgeous example was made in Ford’s Long Beach, California (VIN code LB) assembly plant on August 8, 1951.
This unit is an all-original car that spent its life in California. After investing more than $30,000 in a total on-frame restoration by a previous owner, this beauty is ready for a new, loving home. The Custom Deluxe series was the top trim level and offered chrome body strips, chrome window moldings, chrome horn ring, two sun visors, door armrests and passenger assist handles on the interior B-pillars for easier ingress/egress.
Finished in Silvertone Gray (code H), the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, with minor blemishes visible upon close examination. The car’s windows, including its split windshield, are clear and crack-free while its lights are haze-free and intact, including the driver and passenger spotlights. Complementing the exterior finish is a new black, cloth soft-top that has a glass rear window.
This convertible rides on wide whitewall tires, size G78-15, surrounding factory wheel covers. Wheels and tires look very good overall. The car’s bodywork is straight and solid, the bumpers fit tightly to the body, the engine bay is very tidy and the battery looks new.
Underhood is Ford’s 239 CID Flathead V-8 with a two-barrel carburetor and breathing through dual exhausts.
Inside, the car’s original red and black interior, (code G) complements the exterior handsomely. The front and rear bench seats are in overall excellent order, as is the black carpeting underfoot. The original two-spoke steering wheel is present and is in satisfactory shape while the red and black inner door panels and red and silver metal instrument panel are in overall excellent shape. The gearshift lever is in good order. Rounding out the interior is a factory AM radio.
All 1951 Fords sported a new “dual-bullet” grille and heavy chrome bumpers. The taillight lenses were slightly revamped and there was a reshaped license plate cover. Inside, a completely different instrument panel was used that grouped all gauges in front of the driver. That year, Ford also added a new “turn-key” ignition. Front suspension is independent coil springs. Headroom was 36.1 inches.
Competition to this Ford in 1951 included Chevrolet’s Bel-Air Convertible Coupe, Hudson’s Custom Commodore Eight Convertible Brougham, Oldsmobile’s Super 88 Deluxe Convertible Coupe, Plymouth’s Cranbrook Convertible Coupe and Pontiac’s Chieftain Convertible Coupe.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows 629 miles since restoration. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
