According to the Shelby American World Registry, number 6S1604 was initially supplied to the Hertz rental agency in Portland. As with all of the Hertz GT350s, after a year it was offered to the general public through the Ford dealer network. A young service technician working at the Ford dealer in Pasco, Washington bought number 1604 in 1967, installed a four-speed manual and used the car for weekend racing.
The car's second (and longest-term) owner, also in Washington state, was a Ford collector and enthusiast. He acquired the car with about 30,000 miles on it and undertook a sympathetic restoration which included replacing the four-speed manual with the correct cruise-o-matic transmission; the car was also repainted during his ownership in the 1980s to a better-than-factory standard.
It has been driven sparingly and meticulously maintained since through two subsequent owners. Paint quality is excellent with straight panels and good gaps; bumpers, trim and glass are in very good original condition. Floor pans are original and likewise excellent with zero rust. Period-correct Goodyear Polyglas tires are fitted on original Shelby alloy wheels. The interior is believed to be all original, with the exception of Carroll Shelby's signature on the glove box door. The condition of the dash, door panels, seats and headliner is consistent with the mileage -- excellent, but not new. Original factory radio remains in the dash; all gauges, lights and switches are working as they should.
The engine compartment is tidy and very correct, including original K-code high performance 289; minor patina on engine components appropriate for age, many new (but correct) parts installed as needed over the years. All period correct hoses, battery, accessories, etc. Service is up to date and the car runs and drives beautifully.
A fine example for the discerning collector that could be shown at any level. For more information about this 1966 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350H for sale at Motorcar Studio in Atlanta, please call 404-692-5250.
