If you're a Ford fan, you've undoubtedly noticed the plethora of high quality Mustangs we've featured over the last 12 months. From our 1 of 1 1964.5 Indy 500 Pace Car to the brutal Saleen S281 Extreme we sold just a few days ago, RK Motors Charlotte is working hard to become your number one source for top notch Ford pony cars. But with prices of documented collector pieces and serious pro-touring builds climbing faster than a P-51 in a dog fight, owning one of these high dollar classics can be more nerve racking than fun. That's why the smart hobbyist who likes driving and enjoying his hardware buys a slick, fully sorted steed like this 1965 drop-top. With a fire-breathing 289 under the hood, an awesome restoration that was completed just last year and exceptional attention to detail, this impressive GT will have you rolling in style!
The beneficiary of a professional, no-expense-spared restoration, this slick pony features a seamless layer of Raven Black pigment that's been highlighted by red GT stripes and sealed in a glossy clearcoat sheen. Take one look down the sides of the car's rock-solid body and it becomes very obvious that great care was taken to ensure every panel is aligned to better-than-factory standards. Step closer to that body's mirrored finish and check out its straight and ripple-free surfaces, which are a product of both clean OEM sheetmetal and high quality replacement panels. Grab the pivotal pieces of that well-adjusted sheetmetal and experience the kind of excellent fit that's right at home reflecting a summertime car show. Then step back to admire one well-done cruiser that's built to exacting specifications thanks to a great combination of skilled workmanship and first-rate finishing techniques.
It's obvious that Ford has always sweated the details on the Mustang. And with completely new brightwork and bolt-on pieces, this car presents a finished, high quality appearance that goes far beyond nice paint and fresh decals. At the front its solid body, an attractive Pony Grille hangs classy driving lamps between clean headlights, chrome-trimmed parking lamps and a mirrored bumper. At the top of that grille, like-new glass rides between stainless wipers, stainless trim and a monochromatic roof. At the sides of that glass, traditionally sculpted sheetmetal lays the groundwork for small mirrors, subtle emblems and old school door handles. And at the back of that sheetmetal, peaked fenders and a second mirrored bumper frame clean tail lights, a highly detailed fuel filler and dramatic stainless exhaust tips.
'Keep it simple' is a good philosophy when it comes to performance and reliability. And the builders of this top notch Mustang did exactly that by bolting a familiar 289 under the car's long black hood. At the top of that fully sorted mill, a gold, freshly decaled air cleaner feeds air in to a coated Edelbrock 4-barrel. Below that carburetor, a factory intake rides between factory heads that are equipped with gold, stamped steel valve covers. In front of those heads, a reliable points distributor sends fire through 7mm Ultimate Heat Protection Wires, which snake around fully restored exhaust manifolds. In front of those wires, new V-belts spin factory power steering beneath a coated AC compressor. And at the front of those belts, a correct pulley fan helps cool a factory Ford radiator. Aesthetically, the Jet Black small block sits in a completely restored engine bay that's been carefully stamped and fully detailed. And nice pieces like Satin Black brace bars, an Autolite Sta-Ful battery and a pliable FoMoCo washer bag provide a perfect amount of visual punch!
What would an excellent restoration be without a great foundation? Take a look under this Mustang and you'll find solid floors that are highlighted by Satin Black paint, Red Oxide primer and choice performance hardware. Behind the hot 289, a factory-spec 4-speed turns a tried and true Ford rear end. At the ends of the car, a restored suspension utilizes factory power steering to maximize launch and handling characteristics. And at the corners of the car, beefy disc and drum brakes provide firm, fade-free stops. Step on the throttle and a fresh stainless fuel tank supplies gas to fresh stainless fluid lines while the aforementioned manifolds hurl exhaust into aluminized pipes, an H-shaped crossover and aggressive turbo mufflers. Power is put to the pavement by a great looking set of Mustang wheels that are wrapped in fresh 205/70R14 BF Goodrich Silvertown redlines. And everything under this Ford, from its rebuilt steering gearbox to its slick stainless hardware, is fully sorted and ready to go!
Open the doors and you'll find a fully restored cockpit that's clean, functional and attractive. Bucket and bench seats wear pleated Pony covers between 2-piece lap belts and new chrome hardware. In front of those seats, a wood-trimmed dash hangs fully rebuilt gauges between chrome accessory knobs and a correct Ford radio. Below that dash, a stylish shifter rides on like-new carpet that's protected by thick floor mats. Opposite that shifter, layered door panels are decorated with pristine stainless trim, new chrome handles and fully functional courtesy lamps. In front of the driver, a classy steering wheel twists around a brilliant Mustang horn button. And behind the passengers, a correctly restored trunk hangs a factory decal above a full-size spare tire and fresh mat.
Whether you're a diehard Ford fan or a new enthusiast who's just breaking in to the collector car hobby, this Mustang is an excellent fit. With small block power and timeless styling, you'll turn plenty of heads without sacrificing comforts and conveniences like air conditioning, power steering, and modern disc brakes. If that sounds like a deal to you, call your friends at RK Motors Charlotte!
