Up for auction is a 1974 Ford Bronco that is believed to be a life long Wyoming vehicle. Coincidentally, the bucking bronco is the registered symbol of the State of Wyoming as seen on the license plates, throughout the University of Wyoming and all around the state. Some believe that Wyoming’s bucking horse image is that of a legendary rodeo horse named "Steamboat" dating back to the early 1900's. One of the best known bucking horses of all time, Steamboat was known as "the horse that couldn't be ridden." Pretty cool!!
This Bronco is in pretty good shape and only has (according to the previous owner) 57,200 original miles on it. The previous owner was the son of the second owner. This gentleman inherited it from his father upon his passing. He said that it was mainly used on the weekends for fun trips up in the mountains. The mileage was not documented on the title, unfortunately. However, once you see and drive it, you can see and feel that it is NOT a high mileage vehicle.
All of the paint is original with the exception of the driver’s door and lower rocker panel outer skins where it had a minor vertical dent that went from door mirror down into the rocker from what appears to be a very minor bump into a tree or wood post. I pulled the door panel saw there were small holes with body filler showing the repair that appears to have been done a long time ago. This is shown in the pictures on the link below. The paint color on the driver’s door is slightly off and there are cracks and imperfections in the body filler on the door skin and rocker panel. There are also a couple of touch ups around the front bumper bolts where it had previously had a tow hitch bolted on. The front seats have been reupholstered at some point. The dash was done too, but not the best job. I believe the rear seat is original and is in really good shape.
There is some rust in the front floor pans. The driver’s side floor pan has a patch riveted on it. There is a patch of rust on each inner fender back by the cowl.
The Bronco has a few minor hail dents on the hood and roof. The paint on the hood and front fenders has some discolorations and imperfections and is thin on the hood. There is small dent on the lower right front fender directly behind the right corner of the bumper and a dent on the left rear quarter of the roof close to the liftgate prop attach point. There are a few other dings here and there, but they are all visible in the pictures.
Other than the above mentioned imperfections, the body is in good shape and is relatively rust free.
Mechanically, it does need valve stem seals in engine replaced. It puffs some white smoke on start up, take off and when letting off throttle to up shift. It does NOT smoke idling, cruising, or accelerating.
The engine is smooth running and has good oil pressure and is very quiet.
It could probably use a carburetor rebuild and fine tuning; it does have some hesitation under hard acceleration.
It has new oil in the engine, transmission and transfer case. New engine oil filter and air filter. Front and rear differential oil has been checked and looks good. Bronco can be driven as is or if you'd rather, you can replace seals and tune carb.
It does start up easily and runs smooth and idles smooth. It has a factory hand throttle to set the rpms up to warm up the engine when cold. It also has an engine block heater (definitely good for cold weather).
The transmission shifts smoothly. Clutch works good and is smooth. Transfer case and lock out hubs also work good.
The brakes and parking brake work good and are smooth.
The steering feels tight the Bronco drives straight and smooth down the road. Yes, it does have power steering (nice feature).
It needs a rear pinon shaft seal as it does leak a little.
The spare tire doesn’t hold air and is in poor condition. All the other tires are older, but in good condition with about 50% tread left.
So while this 43 year old Bronco is not perfect, I would say it is probably above average for being unrestored and very original. In fact, even the exhaust system (front to back) appears to still be all original. That’s pretty cool!
If you want a low mileage, uncut good original Bronco with minimal rust and almost all original paint, then you might be interested in this one.
From watching other early model Bronco auctions, I believe the reserve price is set very reasonably on this one.
