For sale is my 1985 Saleen....first year of full production, one of 25 red hatchbacks, blah, blah, blah......if you're looking at this ad, you know about Saleens.
Now it nice to see so many fine examples of Saleens in pristine condition....never seen rain....never raced.....only polished and taken out on sunny days and protected from soccer moms, bird crap and bugs getting squashed on the windshield.........this is not one of them.
85-093.........faded chalky exterior, chipped paint, surface rust.....it has earned its nickname "The RAT Saleen" It's been revived, not restored.
Mechanically the drive train had only 56,000 original miles when I brought it home.....the stock brakes were locked, it wouldn't start and when it finally did, you could hear that the exhaust was falling off.
I realized a long time ago, I prefer to drive and not polish a car, so my efforts were put into reliability and smiles per gallon, not how many coats of wax it has......so let the mods begin.
I decided that because I don't want to die just yet, I upgraded the stock crap brake combo to 13" cobra disks and calipers, I then scrapped the weak 7.5 and replaced it with a 1998 disc brake unit fitted with 3.73 gears.
New shocks, struts and H&R springs replace the sagged racecraft and failed bilsteins.......I also installed a front strut tower brace and a rear shock tower brace. Staggered 17 inch wheels round out the suspension.
After getting the car running, I drove it to the 2014 Saleen Nationals in New York......It was absolutely one of the warmest receptions I have ever received, a great group of guys and the honor of having Steve Saleen sign the dash was the icing on the cake. On the way home from that showthe radiator decided to commit suicide so I upgraded to a 4 row Aluminum Radiator and SSP Blue Silicone hoses.
Considering the engine was a low mile virgin I decided to violate it and throw the typical mustang recipe at it, B303 cam, timing chain, new water pump, fuel pump, under drive pulleys, long tube headers, high flow intake, a new Holley carb and MSD ignition.
Interior is stock, all original and in very good condition, it has a new heater core, the A/C blows cold and is penguin approved.
The body of the car is pretty straight considering its neglect, the frame, floors and most importantly the strut towers are solid. The car sat outside for a loooong time. The doors have some surface rust on the bottom where the seams are, the hatch and the hood are rusty in the typical areas.......the rust that appears on the passengerquarter panel is surface rust only, not rotted through, and it was treated and clear coated to prevent further decay. I have and will include in the sale, rust free replacement hood, hatch and a pair of doors. Basically everything I collected for restoration purposes will be included with the car. Also every factory original part I removed and replaced with upgraded items is in my basement and will go with the car. So basically all stock items that were removed have been saved with the exception of the 7.5 rear, which has returned to its true calling as a boat anchor.
The wing is weathered, the side skirts are cracked, the rear spats are perfect and the front spoiler has no tears. All glass is good.
All 1985 Saleen specific parts are present except for the radio. I also have an NOS shift knob and the elusive alarm system which was neatly removed to avoid damage. I also have the gold 4 lug Hayashi wheels in my basement.
Thiscar isa solid low mileage foxbody that you can reliably drive coast to coast...........Ive owned this car since 2013 and have put less than 2000 miles on it.........I like the car, but not enough to restore it so I'm offering it up for sale.........if there's no sale, the local guys know me..........I'll just start running up the miles and drive it into the ground.......or maybe do a Coyotedrive train swap with an independent rear....... and The Silver State Classic Challenge..............hmmmm.......I better post this before I change my mind.
No trades, Not gonna reveal the reserve. I may lower or remove the reserve if it gets close. If is sells I guess I'll have to change my user ID too.
Ask any and all questions before auctions end...........Sold as is where is!
Good Luck and let the Forum bashing begin!!!
