1967 Ford Mustang Additional Info:
Up for sale is this 1967 Ford Mustang fastback body shell that I purchased from a man here in Montana where it had been in his possession for many years. Certainly also many years before, when fastbacks were common, someone cut the front end off in a crude method of obtaining the front suspension setup. Because this took with it the inner-fender serial number (and the drivers door is from another car), there is only so much I can say about the car, but I can affirm that it came from the factory in Rangoon Red with a black standard interior and optional fold-down rear seat. A bent fan shroud in the body when I got it suggested that it was also a V8 car, and the fact that the pedals were missing suggests that it came equipped with a manual transmission.
The body is a well-preserved example of a dry Montana car, free from the corrosion and cancerous rust found in most other parts of the country (no road salt in Montana). It was repainted once in the factory color and still wears most of that paint under the primer I sprayed to reveal the body's condition. It is ready for blasting and finish work for your restoration, and will therefore save time and money over a body that still needs to be stripped, or one that that been hit or heavily rusted. This accident-free body, as you can see from the photos, is very clean and straight, though, like any example, will need some work which I will detail below.
For starters, it will obviously need new front frame rails and inner fenders, which most Mustangs need anyway, certainly if you are doing a quality restoration. There are small dents here-and-there which I did my best to photograph. The drip rails, window surrounds (including the rear window), seat risers, rockers, and firewall are all rust-free and very clean. The floor is un-cut and solid except for the four foot pans, where the carpet held water and rusted them out. The rear quarters are solid except for the lowest rear portions where mud and water collected and rusted them - lower patch panels should suffice. (Prior to the repaint years ago these areas were prepped with plastic filler as can be seen in the photos). A shallow dent was pulled out of the left rear quarter with three holes drilled (see photo). There are stress cracks at the top of both rear frame arches (see photo) which could be easily welded. The area right above the radio opening was bent but also could be easily worked out (see photo). The roof has some shallow denting but the body crease is clean. The new owner should plan on replacing the rear valance (panel that holds the backup lights) and decklid. Both doors are solid, uncut, and unrusted, and should require only minor finish work on a few minor flaws. The mounting flange for the gas filler neck is bent (hidden by the gas cap). There are pinches on both drip rails on either side of the windshield (see photo), presumably from using a cable to lift the body - once straightened, these will be hidden by the stainless steel surrounds.
As you probably know, these fastback bodies are being reproduced and retail for $17,000 (before shipping) - like this one, they do not come with a title or VIN but are bodies only. I have priced this one (a real Mustang built at the Ford factory) at less than half that price. Of course you'll need to do work to get this one ready for paint which you don't have to do with the repros, but at this price, you can put a lot of money into that effort before reaching $17K. My thought was that a guy could buy a complete $1500 coupe, swap everything that he needed to, and come out with a restored or restomodded '67 Fastback for between $10-15K, built exactly like he wants it. Such a car will fetch around $30,000 today, so there's room here to have fun and make some money.
Start with a straight and solid body and you'll be time and money ahead. I don't think you'll find a cheaper, straighter, cleaner body than this.
Sold "as-is" and "where-is", and all prospective buyers are welcome and encouraged to inspect the body in person. I will be happy to answer any questions. Please note that although eBay required me to select "Rebuilt" for the title section, there is no title, but i will be happy to provide a bill of sale if desired. I will assist in lifting the body onto a trailer with my hoist if necessary, or will strap it to a long pallet for truck shipping.
