1992 MUSTANG LX RESTO-MOD.
RUST FREE TEXAS CAR!!
“Fox body” Mustangs seem to have been used up, rusted, and sent to the crusher. But if you can find a good rust-free example, they are a great starting point to build a great driving and great handling car.
That’s what I did with this one. When I bought this Mustang (a ’92 “Summer Edition”) it, the mileage was around 21,000. (It is now showing 27,XXX, although it will have more on it by the time you buy it because I drive the car.) It was owned by a little old lady (not kidding!) who traded it in because it messed up her hair when the top was down. I traced back the ownership further to a local guy who bought it from, yes, another little old lady!!
To me, it was a great place to start to build a car that would allow me to fix everything that Ford scrimped on. These cars, especially the convertibles, suffered badly from body flex. I fixed all of that with the ladder-type subframe connectors (see photos) that are bolted and welded and I added the three-point strut tower brace. All that made this an entirely different car!
But that was only the beginning.
PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING: Out went the slushbox, replaced with a custom-spec 5-speed manual (ratios: 2.87, 1.89, 1.28, 1.0, and .64 in overdrive) with a Hurst shifter. Out went the 2.73 rear axle (replaced with a 3.55), the master cylinder, rear-end (replaced with a Torsen), the shocks, the brakes (now wearing Baers with slotted and drilled rotors), the wheels and tires (now wearing 245/45 R17 Bridgestone Potenza) and lots else.
ENGINE: I was going to hype the engine but with the spec-built manual transmission, it really didn’t need it as I didn’t intend to drag race it. I set it up to Autocross but never got around to doing so.
INTERIOR: I even got rid of that ugly ’92 steering wheel with the humongous airbag. In ’92, they didn’t have a tilt wheel so when I replaced the steering wheel with an earlier model wheel, I put the earlier tilt column in as a replacement. I replaced the seat covers and the seat foam. I installed an aftermarket radio with all of the updated goodies. I still have the original steering wheel if the buyer wants it.
EXTERIOR/BODY&PAINT: I replaced the top and tinted the windows with high-end ceramic tint. As to the exterior, I want to disclose to the buyer that this is NOT a pristine exterior car and it shows the normal wear and tear that a car of this age and mileage will have. There are little scratches and scrapes but no dents. One of the former owners tried to touch up some of the spots and used the incorrect paint color (a darker red). If you want to win a trophy for pristine body and paint, this is not your car. If you want to win a trophy for a one-of-a-kind Fox Mustang that handles, stops, shifts and steers really well and is FUN to drive (I took it on the Power Tour three years ago), this is your car! Being a little old lady’s former car, it has its share of nicks and scratches. I have a clean CARFAX report and encourage bidders to obtain their own for peace of mind. The only rust evident is surface rust on the driveshaft and the exhaust pipe. As you can see from the photos, there is no undercarriage rust. You can still see the original factory paint color on the undercarriage.
OTHER: Mechanically, everything works. Due to the non-stock wheel/tire combination, the front tires rub ever so slightly on a hard turn in a parking situation. That can be cured by rolling the fenders a bit. I never saw it as a real problem.
The photos show just about everything I changed.
I am a car enthusiast and took very good care of this car while I had it. Kept out of the rain and always in my climate-controlled garage while I owned it.
