1965 Fiat Familiare Wagon Additional Info:
When was the last time you saw a Fiat 1100D Familiare Station Wagon amidst the rather mundane and un-interesting contemporary "iron" which traverse today's highways.? Ok... all kidding aside, theydidn't all break down, thus you never see one running. "Tony" was on top of this one.
Vintage station wagons are fast becoming the "sleepers" in the collector car world. Here's the story behind it.
Originating from its original owner on the Cape of Massachusetts, I was fortunate enough to stumble on this iconic, very original and certainly unique 28K mile Italian wagon, being represented by the older owners associate. The Fiat wagon had been in hibernation for well over 27 years, last driven in 1989.
Recommissioning it involved extensive cleaning of accumulated dust, however much to my surprise, after having installed a new 12 volt battery and new fuel and oil, it started with the first turn of the ignition key, and runs fabulous with no leaks, smoke or unusual noises. Further work entailed new oils and filter, brakeinspection with brake fluid flush and adjust, new antifreeze (correct green), drive belt, air filter, spark plugs, buffing, polishing and waxing its oxidized original paint, and replacement of thefront passenger and drivers seat cushion upholstery due to some age cracking.
The Fiatssemi monocoque chassis/body is in nice condition, illustrating some minor surface rust, from random dents, dings and scrapes, and thinning paint in a few areas, quite typical to see on a 56 year old vehicle. One very small area of perforation at the left front fender forward bottom edge has been stabilized, and hasn't changed in the time I have owned the car. Overall, the Fiat 1100D Familiare wagon is a very solid car, floors, rockers, quarter panels, etc., with originalpaint with the exception of the left front fender which was refinished at some point in the past and shows some peeling. There appears to be no bondo on the car.
a 1221 cm/3, 73 cu/in inline overhead valve four cylinder engine with Webercarburetor and mated to a four speed "onthe tree" manual transmissio, its actually quite spry and responsive on acceleration and cruise, and without question, absolutely fun to drive. Approximate fuel economy is 35 mpg with a 10.6 gallon fuel tank. Tires are 560x14 bias ply whitewalls and are older, however a set of 175/64/14 radial whitewalls would improve traction, ride and handling. All the glass is very nice and all interior controls and lights function normally.
In conclusion, this is a terrific, very original and uncorrupted Fiat 1100D Familiare wagon. Very unique, fun for auto events, travel to the beach or camping, or simply taking it for an occasional drive. It certainlygarners a tremendous amount of attention when I drive it. It's too cute... For all intents and purposes, it should be kept in its original charming condition, given they are only original once, and its condition tells its own story over the decades. Mileage is believed to be original, given the previous owner occasionally used it for for trips to the beach and fishing on the Cape. The speedometer reads slower thanactual speed, however the odometer registers correctly.
