1960 Fiat Autobianchi 110B
For consignment, not a car seen everyday, in the form of a 1960 Fiat Autobianchi 110B. This hardtop with a soft top insert to open to the fresh air mini car has undergone a full restoration 25 years ago and still holds its shine and mechanical reliability to this day. It has its original rebuilt engine which is a 2 cylinder version, and the interior is surprisingly roomy and comfortable and easy access is had with the rear hinged doors, (suicide styled). It has numerous awards under its belt including an article in Hemmings Sport and Exotic Car Mag, spent some time in the Hershey AACA Museum, numerous trophies at local car shows and is an Elite Club member at Carlisle, PA import car show in 2013.
Exterior
Simple, small and very effective the car is bathed in light green, and white topped. This may be familiar to a certain bicycle one may have in their garage with Autobianchi name spelled on its downtube also in Celeste green. This however is a totally different company. The car is wonderfully compact, has a canvas top insert that rolls rearward to open the cockpit up to the elements on a good day, and suicide doors allow easy access. A hockey stick cove is in the center of the car which is peppered with some nice chromed trimming spears, bumpers, badges, and bezels. From the rear part of the cove to the back from the side it actually resembles a mini mustang! A white painted roof is a nice contrast to the green exterior of the body. Vertical tail lights are just above the rear bumper and create a small fin for the rear quarters. Within the trunk is the 2 cylinder engine. Mini 12-inch wheels are wrapped in 4.50-12 thin whitewall tires on each corner. A shiny dog dish wheel covers each center. Just cheek pinch-ingly cute for this vehicle.
Interior
A swing of the suicide hinged doors and we see some nice two tone door inserts in mint green and cream vinyl. Actuators and cranks are chromed and nice and shiny. The well preserved bomber style buckets are in front, and sport more two tone uppers and seat edges in the lighter material. Some piping is also on these chairs. Believe it or not a green vinyl bench seat is stuffed in the back, as will the passengers that could be seated there! A full metal jacket dash is in front and it has an oval shaped gauge cluster within a black center in front of the large steering wheel panel. Some other simple knobs and pulls are also here for various functions, and the starter and choke flank the shift lever. A metal stowage bin floats below the dash and above some utilitarian black rubber flooring.
Drivetrain
A flip off the rear trunk lid reveals a nicely done clean engine bay and within its confines we find an efficient 499cc 2 cylinder engine which produces 21 ponies! A 1-barrel Weber carb feeds this engine, and it has a 4-speed manual transmission on the back which pushes power to the 4.875 rear axle. All clean for this green machine.
Undercarriage
Too mini for our lift, but what I can see is all rust free and solid framework for the car. No rust, road dirt, drips or spills and all buttoned top underneath. The ride is provided by independent coil spring front suspension, and a transverse leaf spring suspension on back. Drum braking is on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability
As I slipped inside I found plenty of room. A pull of the lever next the the shifter engaged the starter and off to the test track I went. All worked swimmingly and save for the horn not blowing all was nearly perfect. I suspect the car has some bad gas as it took a while to start, but once it ran it did so beautifully.
Certainly you will be the ONLY person in your neighborhood with one of these examples. Marketed to the masses in war devastated Italy, this car presented as an example of mobile austerity. All restored and ready to go and win awards and provide some real fun driving experiences. A head turner albeit very small.
