In 1975, Ferrari released a car that would become an instant icon: the 308 GTB. The stunning Pininfarina-designed body took the crowds by storm at the Paris Auto Show. The looks promised plenty of fun that the engine backed up. A 2.9 liter aluminum V8 offered a 7700 RPM redline and 237 horsepower in carbureted models such as the one offered here. Power was put to the ground through a 5 speed, dog leg manual gearbox with the legendary Ferrari gated shifter. In 1977, Ferrari added the GTS to the 308 lineup, which had a targa top allowing the driver to hear the small V8's song more clearly. Unfortunately, in 1980, Ferrari was forced to add a mechanical fuel injection system to comply with emissions standards and the 308 lost 35 HP. In 1982, they introduced the Quattrovalvole models, pushing power output back up to 230 HP for US spec cars, however no 308 was as powerful or as light as the early carbureted models.

The 1978 308 GTS offered here is finished in striking Giallo Fly over Black. Having travelled just under 61,000 miles since new, it presents beautifully. The number's-matching engine received a full major service last year including fresh timing belt, valve adjustment, ignition system overhaul, fuse box/relays serviced, carburetors rebuilt, new battery, and a full fluid/filter change. More recent work includes a service of the factory R12 air conditioning system, new targa top seals and new Dunlop tires. The interior was just refinished with new, glove soft, Italian leather seat upholstery, correct wool carpets, new floor mats, Clarion CD stereo with Bluetooth plus aux/usb ports, upgraded LED backlighting to the guages, and a new Momo Monte Carlo steering wheel. The previous owner made a few changes to give this 308 a better look, including a European-spec bumper conversion, a complete exterior respray in the original color, 16-inch QV-style wheels, ANSA exhaust system, drilled alloy pedals, alloy footrest, and a shortened shift lever that is much more comfortable to use. The finished product is a 308 that looks how the US cars should have and offers a few of the conveniences of modern sports cars that we are accustomed to now.

This 1978 GTS was sold new in Tucker, Georgia at FAF Motorcars Inc. The second owner moved the car to Washington State and it has lived in the area ever since. The current owner purchased the 308 from a NW Ferrari Club of America member and is being offered for sale from his private collection where it lived next to a Giallo Modena 360 Spider and among other exotic vehicles. This car is complete with factory tool kit, jack, spare tire, battery tender, service manuals, parts manuals, partial records, and rare Ferrari Certificato di Indentificazione. This 308 would be a worthy addition to anyone's collection, having been maintained beautifully and slightly modified to make it a modern classic that you'll really want to get out and drive. There were only 3219 carbureted GTSs built and values have steadily increased in recent years making these 308s highly sought after with collectors and first time Ferrari owners.
