328 GTS
1988
Beautiful, timeless yet familiar, the Ferrari 328 is considered by some Ferrari enthusiasts to be one of the most reliable Ferraris; unlike some models, most engine maintenance can be performed without lowering the engine from the vehicle. This example is just one of 1,548 Ferrari GTS models made in 1988 and this particular 328 is a rare Euro Italian home market GTS!
This example, made in Ferrari’s Maranello, Italy factory is dressed in Rosso Corsa with black trim. The paint and trim are in overall in excellent condition as are the body-colored bumpers. The car has its original glass panels. The car’s bodywork is straight and solid. The car’s Targa roof panel is in similar condition. The engine bay is quite tidy and its forward cargo area has the spare wheel and tire.
This car has Ferrari’s flat-style, five-spoke, 16-inch “star” alloy wheels shod in 205/50R16 blackwall Bridgestone Regno radial tires. The car features four-wheel disc brakes, front and rear suspension are independent, double wishbones, with coil springs, hydraulic and telescopic dampers and front and rear anti-roll bars. The steering is rack and pinion.
The 328 uses the Ferrari Dino engine produced from the late 1950s to the early 2000s. It has a 3.2-litre, four-valve-per-cylinder, transverse mounted, rear mid-engine V-8 layout. The V-8 engine was essentially of the same design as that used in the 308 Quattrovalvole model, with an increase in capacity to 3185 cc, with a bore and stroke of 83 mm x 73.6 mm and a type reference number F105 CB 000. The engine retained the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system of its predecessor but was fitted with a Marelli MED 806 A electronic ignition system. As with the preceding 308 models, the engine was mounted in unit with the all synchromesh five-speed manual transmission, which was below and to the rear of the engine’s sump.
Inside, the black leather seats are in overall very good order, as is matching black carpet. The three-spoke steering wheel, complete with prancing horse hub is in similar condition, as are the inner door panels and the black instrument panel, the center console with its gated shifter and a Kenwood AM/FM stereo with CD player. Though most times, the owner would rather listen to the engine’s song instead of the car stereo.
The Ferrari 328 GTB and GTS are mid-engine, V-8, two-seater sports cars. It was the successor to the Ferrari 308 GTB and GTS. While mechanically still based on the 308 GTB and GTS respectively, small modifications were made to the body style and engine, most notably an increase in engine displacement to 3.2L for increased power and torque output.
Documentation includes original leather binder containing original owner’s manual, original sales and service organization manual plus a letter from Ferrari North America to a previous owner verifying the car’s certification status and VIN.
Competition to this Ferrari in 1988 included Aston Martin’s Volanté, Chevrolet’s Corvette and Porsche’s 911 Turbo Targa Slantnose.
