The 308 was designed by Pininfarina and presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1975 as an extension of the Dino 308 GT4. The Ferrari 308 was the replacement of the 246 Dino. The first 308 GTB were built from 1975 to 1977 and it had a body of fiberglass, later models were all fitted with a steel body. From 1977 till 1980, two versions of the 308 were built, a GTB with a closed bodywork and a 308 GTS with a targa top. Only a few cars in the 308 GTB series were provided with a dry sump system and this system was only available in the European version of the car.
The successor of the 308 GTB/GTS, the 208 GTB/GTS entered the market in 1980. As it can be identified by the name, the engine capacity was reduced to 2 liters. This engine is still the smallest V8 engine ever made. The power of the engine was a small 155 hp, criticasters thought that this was far too low for a Ferrari.
In addition to the lighter 208, from 1980 till 1983 a 308 GTBi / GTSi was produced which came with a Bosch injection system Digiplex. These GTBi/GTSi models also had a significantly lower power than the previous 308 GTB/GTS. Ferrari launched the 308 GTB QV (Quattro Valvole, four valves per cylinder) in 1982 to meet the demand for more power. The 308 GTB QV was built till 1985 after which it was succeeded by the Ferrari 328.
According to many the first Ferrari 308 models, the 308 GTB/GTS, was the most pure version of the car which also had the most power.
