1989 Ferrari 328 Coupe Additional Info:
THE EXTREMELY RARE 1989 Ferrari 328 GTBWhile the 328 GTS was the more popular version of it’s day, the smoother lines, better rigidity and handling, and reduced weight of the GTB has become the model of choice by Ferrari enthusiasts. For the 1989 year model, each US dealer was required to accept one GTB in order to obtain an allotment of the popular GTS model. With only 40 US Ferrari dealerships at the time, the 1989 year model GTB is extremely rare in the US. Another rarity in the 328 market is a 1989 year model with any mileage. Most of the cars at that time were purchased as investments and as the super car market tumbled in 1990 these investments were locked away and never driven. In addition to commanding a purchase price premium, these “garage queens” routinely require significant immediate maintenance before they can be driven.
The car offered here has been driven and maintained not as a collector’s prize, but as a high performance sports car as it was meant to be. This is a two-owner car having been purchased new by the original owner at Wide World of Cars in New York. The car comes with all tools, books and keys as well the original window sticker. Service history dates back to the purchase date with a gap from the mid 90’s to 2004. The original owner stated all service work was performed by Wide World of Cars up to 2004, however, they neglected to stamp the owner manual service pages at one point as had been done on earlier services.
I purchased the car in 2007 and brought it to Alabama. I have performed and documented routine maintenance while professionals have performed some major service items. When I moved to Boulder, Colorado in 2012, the car came under the care of Dave Helms at Scuderia Rampante. The car is original with the exception of upgraded hoses and electrical components from Dave Helms of SR Innovations (SRI). The exhaust system is original and has passed Colorado emissions as recently as July of 2015. Most of the paint is original with the exception of the front bonnet and nose, which the original owner had repainted in the mid 2000’s due to rock chips. Undercoating was reapplied to the lower rocker panels in 2015 due to age and rock chips. Michelin Pilot Sport tires were installed in the summer of 2014. The interior is original with minimal seat bolster wear on the driver side. Suspension is responsive and the steering is precise. The ABS system functions perfectly with routine brake system bleeding using ATE Super Blue. Wheels are in excellent shape with no “road rash” and all coating intact and glossy. All lenses and glass are original. The A/C system functions perfectly as does the cabin heat. All gauges are in working order as are all switches that look new.
The car is currently available for viewing and test-drives at Scuderia Rampante in Erie, Colorado (scuderiarampante.com) where the most recent major service was performed in September of 2105 that included:Replaced cam belts and tensioner bearings (Hill Engineering)Replaced accessory beltsChanged engine oil (Redline 5w40) and filter (UFI)Changed gear oil (Redline 75w90NS)Changed coolant (BMW Coolant)Replaced air filter (UFI)Cleaned fuel injectors and replaced o-ringsReplaced Catalytic Control UnitBrake service including turned rotors and all new pads (ATE)Serviced A/C system including replacement of expansion valve and filter drier and R-12 rechargeInstalled SRI coolant hose kitInstalled SRI petcock coolant drain kit
Past service items performed under the current ownership:SRI crank sensor harness installed in 2015 (beta test car)SRI fuel hose kit installed in 2014SRI gold connector kit installed in 2013 (beta test car)SRI ignition wires installed with new NGK plugs in 2012Oil and gearbox pan gaskets replaced in 2011Unobtanium Supplies shift shaft seals and Delrin shift bushing installed in 2011Alternator rebuilt in 2011Rebuilt water pump installed in 2011New A/C compressor installed in 201160K mile service performed in 2008 that included cam timing, valve adjustment and replacement of all cam shaft o-rings and seals.
This is a well-sorted original condition 1989 328 GTB in the classic rosso corsa over tan. As 1 of 40 in the US and probably the only one of those 40 to have actually spent its life on the road, this is an opportunity to own a collector’s favorite at a significantly lower price. Don’t miss out!
