1989 Dodge Daytona ES
To compete with the ever popular Fox bodied Mustang, Dodge initially unveiled the Laser, which looked amazingly similar to the Mustang. This car was low slung, and sporty, with plenty of upgrades aimed at the executive market. Eventually this car became the Sporty Daytona which was more for the masses. In 1989 the ES model was offered with contrasting ground effects fairings, and snowflake wheels and only available in a 5-speed.
A funny thing happened on the way back from the dealership. A gentleman in upstate NY was specifically requested by his wife to have a sporty car with a 5-speed transmission...he purchased our Daytona seen here. After two weeks she changed her mind and hated driving the stick shift. Her husband, not wanting to take a loss on the car, stuck it in a heated garage with his Corvette Collection, and there it sat only driven occasionally until 2017. Our current consigner snapped it up, and ...well...put it in storage only clocking an additional 100 miles since his purchase. So now we have a Dodge Daytona ES 5-speed with only 2,177 ORIGINAL MILES. So much for changing one's mind!
Exterior
All original all low mileage condition all red save for the ES ground effects fairings on the rockers, and lower band around this car which are presenting in silver. Hidden headlights black trimmings, tinted windows, and a black louvered rear glass with a spoiler on the end and we are talking Daytona. Throw on a sporty sunroof in smoked glass, a triangular window for the B pillar, and taillights that stretch from side to side with a vented rear two tone bumper, and let's go racin'. And lest we forget the ES snowflake wheels which have never even seen a curb, let alone touched it, and original tires.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we can see a small black square pattern within a gray field broadcloth covering the top of the door panels. On the bottom is gray carpet, and streaking through the middle is a molded vinyl armrest, extra padded. A set of nice buckets with more of the square pattern broadcloth for tuck and roll inserts, and clear gray cloth bolsters with vinyl piping cover these seats. Same for the rear bench which presents more like dual buckets with a shared center panel. A nice clean console with a glovebox and the shifter sitting proudly in the center, flirts with the dash which shows as original, and is in black and gray with white numbered and lettered instrumentation. Gray carpet for the floors and a gray headliner, all surfaces like new, and essential they are.
Drivetrain
A horizontally opposed 2.5-liter 4 banger is under the hood. It has EFI, and a 5-speed manual transmission with a 3.48 final drive.
Undercarriage
Preserved like a wonderful time capsule, the underside is no rust, structurally very sound and even has the factory red overspray still seen in the floorpans. A single clean rust-free exhaust is on, and suspension (Independent coil springs upfront, and solid bar coil prings for the rear) is like new with slight corrosion and little surface rust. Power disc brakes were used on all 4 corners and indeed the exhaust is original.
Drive-Ability
Hopping inside this car still smells new! All surfaces are excellent and in unused condition. She fired right up and performed like a new car on the test track. All functions are working swimmingly.
Amazing low mileage, amazing due to a woman changing her mind (go figure). But someone's loss could be your gain, come on down to Classic Auto Mall, visit the East wing, and you could pick up this survivor (although pampered) car and the only thing you'll have to do is change the break in oil. Sheesh!
