1976 Dodge Other Pickups Adventurer 4bt Cummins Additional Info:
Owned by me since arriving here from California, 15 years ago, this diesel swapped pickup has been used often every summer with nary a problem, which shows the caliber of the mechanics of it and the quality of the engineering of the swap. It has had expensive components used and there wasn't a shortcut in any way to make it an easier task. It still has two gas (fuel tanks) which required two inlets each for the diesel system, along with the original dash electric switcher (tank selector) which now involves 6 lines-- 2 to the engine, 2 to the front tank, and 2 to the rear tank. Diesel engines do not make vacuum by their design, so a vacuum pump was installed that runs off of one of the two engine belts which powers the power brakes and the cab heater and the shifting of the automatic transmission. The power steering pump mounting bracket is incorporated into the drivers side motor mount and of which all the drivetrain mounts are an engineering accomplishment all on their own. The front of the engine block just clearing the front crossmember of the frame and just missing the firewall on the back of the engine. Not to mention the GM alternator, A/C pump and components (134a), electric cruise control (hooked to a Cummins diesel fuel injection pump??) with the Mopar original cruisecontrol on the end of the blinker switch used to select your speed--- must have spent many sleepless nights figuring that one out. When I take it to a car show and open the hood, the gearheads in the know stare at it to see how it was done and some take pictures. Then there is the Ford C6 transmission and with what is involved with the gear shift lever and the kickdown control and cooling lines. Next is the Gearvendors Under/overdrive and the effort to hook that all up mechanically and electrically. It has a control box under the dash and is set to shift the engine into overdrive at 42 mph. It works great!! It shifts into a gear that it never had. It has it's original floating rear end, and 16.5 rims and tires. This rig can fly along at 70, hauling a trailer, on cruise control, A/C blasting and stereo cranked... but, when you come to a hill, --turn down the stereo so that you can hear-- and feel-- the turbo do its thing! Makes me grin every time. Especially in the Poconos where my gas model buddies are falling behind. You know, with my black smoke--
It was like new and just done when I acquired it, but has some chips in the paint and fading now with some clearcoat peeling, all minor. It has always been stored inside and never driven in the winter. Other than regular service, and a master cylinder, it's been good (A/C needs service, doesn't kick on). It has not had any higher performance mods to the engine that is popular today. That will be at the new owners discretion. True mileage unknown.
One story with it-- I had to haul a bulldozer to a field to remove stumps and as I neared the place, my God, there was a steep -I mean steep-- hill that went on forever-. No way, I thought will this make it, and I'll have to back down with a bulldozer on a trailer... That thing went up that hill!!! Turbo, Gearvendors, C6, 4 cylinder all working together. Just incredible! No fancy big gas motor could have done that. I put a picture of that dozer and trailer in the listing, it is actually hooked to the Dodge.
!Remember to pull up to the diesel pump!
