1981 Dodge Ram Pickup D150
2WD 148,000 miles
Slant 6, 6 cylinder engine.
Automatic Transmission
I have owned this truck for 10 yrs. The gas mileage is around 14 mpg in town, so it is only driven about once a month. I had planned to restore it, but got a Chevy Corvair which has taken all of my extra time and cash.
Pros:
The body is in very good condition for its age, but is beginning to show rust spots, the worst is on the driver’s side door frame. tail gate has scraps and surface rust from adverage usage over 25 yrs.Front bumper is great, no rust, good chrome. Rear bumper has a couple dings in it, good chrome.
The engine is in good condition and runs smooth.
Full size bed for hauling stuff.
Cons:
The six cylinder doesn’t have a ton of power. But the slant 6 has a well-earned reputation of reliability. I have never had any problems with it.
Heater works, AC does not work.
The gas gauge hasn’t worked since I have had the truck. I just write the expected mileage down and get fuel before I reach that odometer number. It’s a little extra work, but I have never run out of gas.
The windshield wipers stopped working this past fall. The motor works, but I think the arm linkage came loose.
The carburetor needs adjustment. It starts up but idles a little rough at cold idle. Once it warms up and idles down it runs smooth at about 800 – 900 rpm. I have fiddled with it many times, but I have never been able to adjust it just right.
It has a little leak at the oil pan and the exhaust pipe catches some of it. When I start it after not driving it for several weeks, the oil burns off the exhaust causing some smoke. Depending on how long it has sat, it can take up to 5 minutes for the oil to burn off. I think it just needs a new oil pan gasket.
I started to notice a clunk about 6 months ago when shifting into reverse, especially if I don’t wait for the truck to reach curb idle rpms. Classic symptom of a u-joint starting to go out. Pretty straight forward ($50) fix though if you are mechanically inclined.
It is good to drive around town, but I would not have confidence driving it any distance without a good tune up and addressing the u-joint.
This truck would be a pretty dependable vehicle with about a $1000 dollars with of work. This truck would be a great candidate for a restoration or as parts for a different truck’s restoration. If you where inclined to do so, you could make some money parting it out.
The truck has a clear title and is sold “As-Is”. So if you have any questions, please ask.
