Up for sale/adoption is my baby, nearly 40 year old, vintage 1981 PLYMOUTH CHAMP. (Made by Mitsubishi). Front Wheel Drive. This is an 8 SPEED/Twin stick transmission. You essentially have 8 forward gears and 2 backup gears. (All shift flawlessly) Car gets gas mileage in the 30s. Our family has a vast knowledge of vintage Japanese cars and it’s reflected in the maintenance of this car. You are not just getting this car, but will get my expertise, advice and assistance after the sale. Just give me a call! With a big move planned in the future and moving closer to retirement, it’s time to make some edits in life. I can’t keep all my toys! So here is your weekend cruiser and head turner!
This car is a native California and Texas car and because of that, has lived its life in a mostly dry environment and absolutely never saw likes of northern winter salt. It’s essentially rust free top to bottom and you would be hard pressed to find another of this vintage in this condition. There are some very minor surface rust spots noted that is on the passenger door, near the glass and on the hood surface, but these are age related and not salt. That is an easy fix.
I will also include an assortment of spare parts, both new and used to have for possible future use. Parts can be elusive for these vintage cars, so it’s always good to have a little stockpile of things tucked away!
The car is mechanically great. I have much documentation on the car. (Please see below for added notes). The car is not tagged, as it’s been garaged for 2 years. I can Texas inspect and tag for you for the actual cost, but if you are taking it to a different state, that is a waste of money. Clean and clear title is ready. The car is regularly started and driven, but has had VERY low mileage for many years. Car has an older repaint. Car is not “showroom” and I don't hold it out to be that, but the car presents very nicely and always gets attention!! I’d rate it at 7.0 out of 10. It has been in car shows.
This Mitsubishi is “unmolested” and as close to original condition as possible. There have been NO modifications and all repairs/maintenance have been done professionally and keeping in the spirit of originality, right down to the new pedal pads, new NOS keys and NOS (power/economy) shift knob! Car is collision free and smoke free. The ashtrays are spotless!
Everything works in this car as it should. All switches, buttons, dials, levers and such WORK. Even the AC still cools. However, it may need a charge to be colder. It’s the original R12 system. I would convert it to 134A.
I am willing to take any additional pics you might want. I can also do some video of the car running. I can assist to arrange transportation of the car to you. (However transportation costs are your responsibility). If you would decide to come to TX to pick up the car, I might have some options to help you with a flight.
HIGHLIGHTS:
1.6 liter OHC engine. Mileage is approx 104K. Although, the speedometer reads about 109K. The tachometer failed, so I replaced the cluster with one as close to the actual mileage as possible. You can car fax the VIN. I can attest to the original mileage of about 104K
I will include various spare parts, (including a fresh, new carburetor for any future need) and even an original service manual and sales brochure!
RARE and now impossible to find. A survivor! Very nice condition / top of the line Plymouth Champ LS. (Imported by Chrysler from Mitsubishi). Car is the 8 speed "twin stick" version with the 1.6 liter engine. 2 door hatchback compact. Car always gets attention when driven! This car has been kept original and has not been molested, altered, rigged, or cheaply maintained. It is a blast to drive, but the reality is that this car is now a vintage car, with increasing value. It should not be used as a daily driver and trashed, afterall it is 37 years old!! I hate to sell it, but I just have too many vintage cars and I'm moving soon.
Car has been garaged for 2 years. Started and maintained and run around the block monthly. Approx 104000 miles
The Good: Car is not a northern rusty car! This lived it's entire life in California and Texas! SUPER, SUPER clean. Never wrecked. NEVER smoked in. Ashtrays are spotless! Body looks fantastic for its age. Has been in car shows. AC, Original R12 system. Operates, but should be converted. It's low on charge. Original stereo 4 speakers. 2 tone paint (Newer). Rear wiper washer, defroster. Alloy/Powder coated wheels. Amp and oil pressure gauge, (work perfectly). Electronic ignition, tachometer. Leather wrapped steering wheel. Locking gas lid. Newer tires, less than 500 miles. Velour interior. All good glass. All good light lenses. All the bits and pieces are present. Even the clock works! Original jack and lug wrench. Original space-saver spare. Original keys. Complete original owners manuals. Sales brochure. Large service manual included.List of all maintenance records. Known issues: Seats have age related tearing at some seams. AC is original R12 and operates marginally. Should be converted. Still hold charge. Some sun fading on interior plastics. Interior drivers sun visor is sun damaged. Passenger's OK. Some minor rust on hood surface and upper passenger door near window. This is all minor and age related, not salt damage.
Recent maintenance done:
Newer tires, rear shocks and springs, new coolant, radiator hoses, new thermostat, new exhaust valves, valve stem seals,(intake exhaust and jet), resurfaced head, ground all valves, new head gasket and fuel pump.
New timing bel, tensioners, pulleys and waterpump.
New spark plugs, cap rotor and ignition wires, ignition module, new front suspension bushings, new rack/pinion bushings, new motor mounts, belts and hoses, new battery, AC belt tensioners, carburetor.
Like new tires. Good brakes.
There's more new items also, that I'm sure I'm forgetting. The car will easily inspect, but it is not current, as it's been sitting in my garage for the past 2 years with periodic starting and driving. It is a fine example of a well preserved piece of Japanese car history. I will also include many spare parts and even an additional new carburetor. I know these cars pretty well and I will remain there for you with support and information post sale
