AMERICAN IRON with a Westy attitude!
O.K. For those of you looking for perfection whoa. . .. . .. . .stop. . .. . .. Put on the brakes here! This is a 39 year old survivor it has flaws as most of that age do! Here is a breakdown of the bad! There are a few small rusty areas mostly in the door bottoms, lower door areas and under the battery, it does have a small oil leak when she is cold, probably the rear main seal, the (intermittent) spot is about a quarter in size when it is cold only. It has factory cruise control but the vacuum diaphragm is blown, and the parking brake handle is stuck closed and the defrost lever is stuck on full, but works fine. The exterior has scratches dings love marks and faded touch-up paint from grandpa. She shines right up with the perfect amount of patina to call it a survivor and still turn heads! That being said
For sale; a vintage time machine, be prepared to be the center of the universe, every time you drive this vehicle you will be approached, random people will take pictures of it, and tell you about the one their uncle or dad had. . ... We rescued it from the back of Grandpa's house, but poor Grandpa passed away a few years back and there she sat, but it was started on occasion by the grandson who wanted it to restore for his family, but time and money became an issue and he had to sell, this is where we stepped in and bought it. We took it to our Transmission shop to have the transmission and rear differential serviced and the transmission shop said that the gasket on the pan was probably the original gasket and that the mileage on the odometer, 75,000, was most likely right, which also matches with the story form the Grandkid about its seldom use and the original gaskets, I also replaced the valve cover gaskets and they looked to be factory original The paint is the original paint we used a fine cut on it and waxed her then the fun started, I have listed all the mechanical and interior upgrades below and have a Youtube video that will help out in the understanding the scale of what we did with her if you want the link!
Sadly the top and the ice box are all that were left from the original conversion that was done, so my wife and I took on the task of rebuilding the interior below is a list of what was done followed by the mechanical work, Over $4100.00 invested after initial purchase, all receipts kept
Floor, filled ribs and laid 1¾" oriented strand subfloor.
High quality vinyl laminate linoleum and rear rubber matting.
Rear seatbelt support mounted to chassis
Folding rear seat/bed with seat belts.
Ice box with matched door pain, custom cabinet with cutting board, hidden storage on top.
Gladiator brand full metal cabinet (lockable)
Gas camp stove, with exhaust fans, wing nut bolted to the top of the cabinet, for easy removal for picnic table use, uses the little green propane tanks.
1½" to 2" Mylar coated foam insulation, as much as could fit behind the walls and Mylar bubble film insulation applied to all small gaps and un-insulated areas. Stays cool inb the summer and warmer in the winter!
¼" Oak plywood walls with a light natural stain.
Ribbed upholstery applied to all doors and door interiors for better insulation.
Sealed all external bolt entries and seams with expanding latex sealer.
Resealed the fiber glass roof with Elastomeric sealant
Reupholstered interior for damp proofing and insulation
Six 12v outlets recessed in various wall locations and one constant/direct solar output in electrical box.
45w Solar panel installed on roof with charge controller and small 35 amp battery in fused electrical box mounted in a killer 1976 wooden 7-UP custom storage box
Two four foot 50/50 remote LED light strips, separately powered, works well with white or wow the neighbors with the colorful display of dazzling colors.

This is the ultimate surfer / day tripper van outfitted for minimal grid usage, perfect for road trips, camp outs, hunting, picnics in the mountains or to the beach fun. The Pop-Top was originally installed by Chef's Campers out of Ballard Washington in 1978 on a new chassis from dodge, we have original paperwork from Chef's campers. The Chef's camper Pop-Tops are by far the superior Pop-Tops due to there all metal and glass construction rather than the usual canvas which ripped tore and got wet easily, costing hundreds of dollars to replace, the metal and glass is rugged and a lot more weather proof. It raises and stows easily and locks down in place when not in use, and it even gives you a couple of extra inches when down, when raised gives 6ft of standing room, with full window views on both sides.
