Another example of Italian exotic powered by American music has arrived at MotoeXotica Classic Cars, a 1973 DeTomaso Pantera that is presented in remarkable survivor condition with only 10,434 original miles as told by the previous longtime owner. This Kentucky two owner example is one of only 572 Panteras that were imported to the United States in 1973. It arrived in the United States on October 10, 1973 via the port of Newark, New Jersey, was sold on November 10, 1973 at Blue Grass Mercury, Inc. in Louisville, Kentucky to a Mr. Gordon J. Waligorski who had the car ordered in factory red as it was his personal favorite color. Mr. Waligorski was a well know inventor and industrial designer and was known for inventing the modern sprinkler head, lottery ticket scratching machines and the ultrasonic plastic welder. He was also a well known collector of over 40 highly desired motorcycles and sidecars, most finished in the shade of red of course! In 1988 Mr. Waligorski sold the Pantera to another Louisville Kentucky family and they kept the car until 2016 in which they moved the Pantera from Kentucky down to their beach home in Naples Florida in 2013. They noted that the Pantera was always stored in a climate controlled garage for the past 28 years which explains the excellent overall original condition!
The car’s factory correct red paint, black trim and white exterior identifications are in very good order but with minor imperfections from age but not to be discouraged because this Pantera still looks amazing today! Especially on a bright sunny spring day! The tinted glass panels and front windshield are in excellent shape, which are clear and crack-free. The car’s lights, including the pop-up headlights, are in similar good condition. The Pantera rolls on original Campagnolo Magnesium sport wheels surrounded by original Goodyear Arriva tires, C60V15 in front and H60V15 in back. All of the car’s body panels are straight and solid and the bumpers are in very good condition. The cargo bay and engine bay are tidy and the battery appears new. The underside of this survivor Pantera is solid and tells the whole story.
Under the rear hood is a Ford 351 CID 4V Cleveland V-8 mounted amidships and mated to a ZF 5DS25 synchronized five-speed manual transmission. All the must have coolant upgrades have been made over the years such as a performance Fluidyne radiator and all new hoses and pipes. Driver assist options include air-conditioning, rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, and power windows.
Inside, the black bucket seats are in near-excellent original condition, while the complimentary original carpet is in overall great order and included with the original weaved mats. While the headliner is in great original condition, the black instrument panel, with its full instrumentation is in excellent condition. The three-spoke, leather-wrapped Ghia Ferrero steering wheel looks great, as do the inner door panels, mirror glass, center console, gated shifter and shift knob. The overall excellent condition of this Pantera's interior really tells the story on how well this car was cared for by its previous two original owners. Completing the interior is a factory AM/FM stereo with period correct Craig speakers.
New emissions and safety laws in the US made changes to the Pantera necessary for sales in the 1973 model year. Changes included the addition of 5 mph impact safety bumpers, which incorporated a built-in airfoil to reduce front-end lift at high speeds and installation of an emissions-certified 8.0:1 compression ratio 351 CID motor. During 1973 the dash was changed, going from two separate pods for the gauges to a unified unit with the dials angled towards the driver.
A new model designation was applied to the US market Pantera with these mandated features; it was called the Pantera L. The "L" model featured many factory upgrades and updates that fixed most of the problems and issues the earlier cars experienced. It was so improved that the 1973 DeTomaso Pantera was Road Test Magazine’s Import car of the year beating out Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, and Porsche.
This car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri. Current mileage on the odometer shows
10,434 miles and is understood to be original based on current condition and statements form the previous long time owner. It is sold as is, where is, on a clean and clear, mileage exempt Florida title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
