The 1970's were a bittersweet time in the automotive market. The American car market was suffering from the effects an oil crisis, safety mandates and rising insurance costs. This caught Detroit on its heals as it struggled to adopt to a more efficient way of building their cars after years of the "more power" approach to performance. Meanwhile, the Japanese car makers who had established a reputation for building affordable and dependable cars were well positioned to introduce sports cars to meet those new conditions and the demand for performance cars. Nissan had already produced the Fairlady Z in the Asian market and later introduced it in the states as the Datsun 240Z. This sports car was not only reliable, efficient, and affordable they were fast! Inspired from the more superior European sports car market of the time, the 280Z featured modern engineering, aerodynamic exterior and a spirited inline 6-cylinder powerplant that ran hard but sipped gas like fine champagne. Garage Kept Motors is proud to be featuring this 1972 Datsun 240Z for sale here.
This car has been repainted with a two-tone gray metallic and pearl white finish that is highlighted with a red pinstripe. The custom paint scheme is well executed and presents with a nice luster. Factory stainless trim is all present and has been restored. The front and rear bumpers shine deeply, though the rubber rub strips are showing some age. The front grille is blacked out with the red highlights that subtly draw your eye. The body is solid and benefits from having been rust proofed many years ago, although there are a couple of minor bubbles in the older repaint.
The oxblood interior provides a nice contrast to the exterior but ties in nicely to the pinstripe that runs the length of the car. The interior has been lightly restored, with the addition of new carpet, seat upholstery and headliner. The rosewood steering wheel frames a factory 160 MPH speedometer and tachometer. Dash mounted factory gauges monitor the engine temperature, amps, oil pressure, fuel level and Seco clock completes the instrument trifecta. An aftermarket Panasonic AM/FM Radio with CD player and aux input allows you multiple options for playing your soundtrack for the road. The manual transmission is shifted via a Rosewood gearshift knob and the cabin is kept cool with factory air conditioning.
Under the hood is clean and lightly detailed. The 2.4 Nissan inline 6 cylinder is factory rated at 151 horsepower at 5600 RPM with 146 pound-feet of torque at 4,400 and now breaths through a trio of Weber Carbs and aftermarket exhaust header providing plenty of extra power for this 2,300-pound rocket. The enhanced power is sent through a factory 4-speed manual transmission back to the 240Z's independent rear suspension. The four-wheel disc brakes have been upgraded with drilled and slotted discs. The underbody has been undercoated and lightly detailed. This combination all rolls on a set of Factory true-spoke wheels with Cooper Cobra radial tires.
These are fantastic cars that are home on the highway of the track. This a great car to drive out to the country and find some curvy roads to tame, maybe find a parking lot autocross or even a track day. However you plan drive this "Z" you will not be disappointed.
