Features include 13″ steel wheels, hubcaps, four-wheel drum brakes, independent front suspension, bright side trim, bench seats, and an AM radio.
This Valiant is offered with a car cover, the original 12-page The Story of Valiant brochure, a service manual and a clean California title in the seller’s name that lists the car’s make as Plymouth.
Chrysler launched the compact Valiant for the 1960 model year as a stand-alone marque, and it was soon absorbed by the Plymouth brand for 1961. The Virgil Exner–penned body of this example incorporates styling cues that include a trapezoidal grille, quad headlights, and sculpted body-side blades, the rears of which extend above the curves of the rear-wheel arches back to slanted taillights. Other details include chrome wraparound bumpers, a driver-side mirror, bright trim, and a single exhaust outlet.
Suspension is handled by unequal-length control arms with lengthwise-running torsion bars up front and asymmetrical leaf springs out back. Braking is provided by drums at all four corners.
The color-coordinated door panels feature black armrests, and other appointments include a black dashboard, black headrests and rear seatbelts added by the seller, an engine-turned gauge surround, a heater, and black carpeting.
A two-spoke steering wheel with a horn ring fronts a 110-mph speedometer, an oil-pressure light, and gauges for amperage, fuel level, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 70k miles, approximately 2k of which have been added under current ownership.
Rated from the factory to produce 101 horsepower at 4,400 rpm, the 170ci slant-six features a single downdraft carburetor and a red-finished valve cover. The engine is original and has not been rebuilt.
This Valiant has a transmission fluid leak, and a loose armrest on the passenger side.
