In 1955, hrysler introduced the C300. The 'C' stood for coupe and the 300 was the horsepower rating of the original Hemi engine equipped wit, wo four barrel carbs, olid lifters, pecial manifolds, nd enlarged dual exhausts. This vehicle gave the Chrysler Corporation a performance and sporty image, much needed persona in this post World War II era. Many European manufacturers, uch as Jaguar and MG, ad introduced high powered, mall, esponsive sports cars. American manufacturers countered with the Chevrolet Corvette and the Ford Thunderbird. The Chrysler 300 was a performance car with a contemporary 'Forward Look' designed by ex-Studebaker stylist Virgil Exner. The design was void of the popular chrome sides which was prevalent during this era. It was simple but aggressive gentleman's car.
The letters continued to climb the alphabet annually until the 300L of 1965 (the letter I was skipped). They became known as the 'letter cars'. In 1959, he 392 hemi was replaced with the 413 cubic-inch Golden Lion wedge-head design engine. In 1962, he 300 Sport series became available alongside the 300H. The 300, ithout a letter designation was continued until 1971. In 1970, he 300 Hurst was produced, uilt by Chrysler and modified by the Hurst Company. The modifications included two-tone paint, pecial striping, poiler on the deck lid, nd wheels. The 300 name was again revived in 1979 as the 300 Special Edition, ut endured a short life span. It was based on the Cordoba platform and available only in white with red leather interior….Even with eleven years of production, ess than 17,000 were produced. The body style’s available were either a two door hardtop or convertible. The convertible was not available during 1955, 956, nd 1963. The L was the last of the letter-series 300s.
Sold alongside the standard 300 series of which over 3700 were built the “L” designation was a special car. The same options that came equipped on an “L” could also be ordered on a 300, nd with a very close style many believe at the time the L wasn’t so special however only 440 were built. Today we now know and understand the rarity and uniqueness of the car. Only 85 cars have been uncovered worldwide and are registered with Chrysler 300 Club members. The 300L is highly sought after in today’s collector car market its performance of 360hp was a quite a feat of engineering in 65 and today makes this car very useable on our new highways. Sluggish cars of the era are no match for the 300L. The main theme of the Legendary Letter cars still made up the essential formula for Chrysler Letter cars no matter the opinion of 300 series buyers or long lived Letter car enthusiasts: personal luxury car with superior performance, mproved handling, ith no reduction in size or weight. The issue of whether the 300-L met or exceeded its counterparts within the brand may be debated endlessly by enthusiasts, ut we can say that the "L" stood apart from other Chrysler cars of 1965. Only 2,845 (2,405 hardtops and 440 convertibles) were built and, n the minds of some, hat is exclusive and will justify attention on all collector levels and in all collector markets.
