This car was bought new by Maud A. Schroeder of Baker City, Oregon from Hessing-Thurber Motors in Boise, Idaho on 24 Oct 1961. This car is fairly well optioned as noted above. The car lived in Oregon it's whole life. I purchased the car out of La Grande, Oregon and then drove this Chrysler from there back to North Carolina. The 3000+ miles and sights were amazing. I've included a few shots from the trip. The car did exceptionally well. I think that was the furthest the car ever had driven in its life. She should be good for many more trips!
Under the hood is a fully rebuilt 413 big block V8 with 4bbl carburetor. The Aluminum 727 Pushbutton Torqueflite operates flawlessly. Parking brake holds the car like it should. It was also serviced and resealed when the engine was done. The car also had new dual exhaust put on it during that time as well which is still in good shape. Car has a nice sound. Not obnoxious and loud. This was all done some years ago by the previous owner. The engine has very low miles on it since the rebuild. The previous owner didn't drive the car extensively at all. I put 3000 miles on it driving across the country and have been driving it almost daily since then. Looking at probably 6000 miles at most on the engine. A phenolic spacer was installed between the intake and carburetor to help with heat soak. The 4bbl Carter carburetor was also rebuilt. The choke is disconnected as the rod is too short with the spacer but she will still start quickly and doesn't need much of "warm up" time. There is a hum that sounds like its coming from the rearend. Probably the bearings in need of replacement as the fluid is topped off. The radiator was also recored.
The brakes were fully rebuilt by the previous owner and everything still looks good. Wheel cylinders aren't weeping and everything seems to be in order. The power brakes seem to work well. The tires are new 15 inch radials installed prior to the cross country trip. Still plenty of miles left as they don't have many miles on them! Good battery.
The car was also painted in the original color probably 10 years ago as well. Car still looks great. The color is a pinkish beige color. Depending on the light its a light pink or a beige color. There are a few chips in the paint here and there but it's still very presentable. The trunk lid does have some rust bubbles on it and the bottom side was rusty around the bracing. The floors are nearly perfect. They were coated with POR15 paint to preserve them. The trunk floor has a piece of sheet metal screwed to it but it doesn't appear that the trunk floor is rusted out. Probably some small holes if anything. Can't see anything underneath the car Trunk weatherstrip channel has some bubbling but doesn't look like it has any rot.
Inside...The carpet, headliner, windlace and package tray were replaced. The seats have covers over them. The original seats are tattered underneath. Door panels are in decent shape. The cloth is stained but vinyl is in good shape. The door seals will need replacement. The roof rail seals were replaced when the headliner was installed.
The space age dash is probably one of the coolest dashboards ever put in a production car. The Astradome houses all the gauges and the electroluminescent lighting still works great! See the photo! All the gauges work and the original AM radio works well. The power antenna functions as it should also! The clock is the only thing that doesn't work. I haven't tried fixing it. The heater works exceptionally well. Good for those cold days! The dealer installed underdash air conditioning is ice cold. It was a really nice thing to have driving across the country in the blistering hot 100+ degree weather! The driver's power window functions flawlessly. The back windows need to be lubed up as they need help going up and down. Passenger front window does not operate. Variable speed wipers work well and have new blades. All exterior lights work. The cruise control works as well but there's a clip missing on the linkage that needs replaced. It keeps the throttle rod from coming off the cruise control module. 6 way power seat is fully functional. Pretty much everything is good to go on this car.
This car would make a great driver and with a little more work could also be a nice show car. I have the original dealer invoice and keys. The car still wears it's original Oregon "Pacific Wonderland" plates and has the original aluminum Forward Look keys...even has the little key tags with a miniature version of the license plate so the keys could be returned to the owner if lost.
